Does anyone have feedback on these reels? I have heard that they are made by Diawa for Cabelas and have basicaly the same mechanics as the Sealines. They sell for $30 less. I know that the sealines are the “cadillac” of linecounters. Are the depthmasters worth savings?

I have never used the depthmasters but a while back i was doing the same research on the line counter reels and was told by a couple of guys that use these reels in their guide profession, that the depthmasters are not worth the $30 in savings..Spend the dough and get the REEL thing…
go with the Sealine by Diawa
here is a post on the line counter reels Cabelas Depthmaster Line Counter Reels
January 2, 2004 at 8:03 pm #287204I agree with the boys! I have had 4 of them and I find them lacking!
GeronimoJanuary 2, 2004 at 8:45 pm #287208Stick with the Diawa Sealines. (The 27’s for line and the 47’s for leadcore) The New Diawa Accudepths have a few bugs they need to work out.

January 3, 2004 at 3:20 pm #287265I agree with previous posts. I owned one depthmaster and within the first couple years began having problems. It now is in the scrap heap in the garage. Some of my Sealine 27s are 10 years old, never a problem. Hopefully some people have had better luck with the depthmasters than me.
February 5, 2004 at 10:17 pm #291647I have a couple of them and dont like them. I always have to fix the drags and the line counter is always messed up, there pretty much junk. my opinion
I will not buy another
The Diawa is the way to go!
February 5, 2004 at 10:29 pm #291649Wade…I like the specs for the Walleye Special SG17LCA reels. My question is would you guys that have the SG27LC consider switching to this reel? Where can I get one and how much$$$????
February 5, 2004 at 11:20 pm #291657Jim, good question. I’d say most of the staff here can answer that question better than I can. I’ve never been a user of line counter reels but this year I am going to try the Diawa AccuDepth out. The Rod and Reel combo is about $65 at Cabelas. James Holst and some of the other guys here will swear by the Diawa Sealine and I believe every word of it but I am going to give the less expensive model a try myself since I won’t be running these all that much.
I’ve also heard good things about the Okuma line counter reels some guys, while others don’t think so highly of them.
I’m sure you’ll hear more on this topic. You can also do a “search” on here and probably find several discussions from the past.
Good luck!!

I have the 27’s and would not hesitate to buy the 17’s. Looks like a good size reel for running braded/superline. I like dealing with Cabela’s. They have excelent customer service.

February 6, 2004 at 6:21 pm #291726I’ve got two 27’s and two 17’s in the sealine group. I really like the feel of the 17’s in my hand. Now I just need two 47’s for leadcore and I’m set, for a while anyway.
February 6, 2004 at 6:22 pm #291727Gotta say the look of the 17’s would be nice for night fishing on Mille Lacs when I spend most of my time holding on to the rod. They are a lighter reel and would be easier to handle for that application……….hands wouldn’t get wore out as fast when crushing those piggies .
If I was in the market for an all new set up of line counters I would take a serious look a the 17’s for river fishing. They hold less line which is a plus, in all reality the 27’s hold to much line in my opinion for river fishing in general but I’m not going to replace the five 27’s that I have now just to get the lighter reel, way to much money to get 5 new ones and set the others aside
On my 27’s I run Spider Wire Stealth in the 20lb test 6lb diameter. I spool 880 ft of 15lb test mono for backing then run on the 150 yards of stealth. Works like a charm!

I use the same backing. Both for running stealth or mono. The key to an accurate linecounter is a full or nearly full spool. Use the same amount of backing on both reels for consistency.

February 6, 2004 at 6:50 pm #288948You bring up a very good piont Jon. I hadn’t ever thought about that until someone mentioned it in a conversation one day.
February 6, 2004 at 7:20 pm #291734Jon & Dustin, you guys have answered my question on the new 17 Walleye counter reels quite well . I value your opinions as you use these products much more than I ever will. Right now I split a 150 YD spool of Stealth 75 YD each on my Baitcasters for throwing Cranks. I never run into a problem doing this. I never owned a line counter, but when I get my new SG17LCA I will put 150 YDS of Stealth on it for trolling. Thanks everyone for your opinions…..JIM
February 6, 2004 at 7:35 pm #291738I see Cabela’s have the Okuma linecounters on sale for $20 off. Anybody have these or any opinions?? Similar to the 17’s?
February 23, 2004 at 7:53 am #293743I was all ready to get one of the Walleye Special SG17LCA Daiwa line counter reels. The other day me being a penny pincher could not pass up a Shakespeare Tidewater 30LCL line counter reel on clearance for $30 at my local Walmart. I opened the package today and it just has a lever to flip for casting (No button ). I measured out 75 Yards (225′) of line to put on another reel. I wound it on the line counter to see how close it measured and it said I had 455′ of line. My question is if you are trolling with a full spool on your line counter do you get a more accurate measurement because of the circumfrence of the filled reel spool? If you tell me to troll 60′ of line I want my line counter to say 60′ not 120′ or even 90′. Or is the only thing the line counter is going to do is tell me when I am fishing the same distance that I caught my last fish at? Also does the Daiwa line counters have a casting button? Needless to say I’m glad I got it at Walmart so I can take it back
