115 Optimax concerns

I purchased a new Optimax and 1750 Crestliner Superhawk in July 2008. although it was supposed to be new the build date for the Opti was 2006. On Monday I took the unit into the dealership to get some cosmetic repairs to the boat completed under warranty. They fired up the motor, said it sounded rough so had a look inside. They said at least one cylinder was scored up pretty bad and have ordered a whole new power head. They haven’t pulled a complete report from the engine yet, so do not know if it will be covered under warranty yet. It has 54 hours on it. I sure don’t think I did anything to abuse the motor, so I hope Merc comes through. I was originally expecting to have it back today, but now with this engine problem….it could be awhile. I am just wondering if anyone else has heard of bad 2006 power heads? Thanks

Merc had the opti’s pretty much figured out by 06.
Many different variables to consider for what could have happened. Definite good luck with this one, as seems more on the strange side.

Yes and no….Actually the had the “bigger” problem resolved by early 2000s. But they still have problems with the 200-250 motors and will continue to do so until engineering changes come into play.

Kinda got some good news, Merc told the dealership to order up a new power head, so they didn’t see anything wrong with the engine report. Bad news is I won’t have the boat for at least a week. Guess I’ll have to get Ricky to take me fishin.

Did the motor act up in anyway the last time you had it out on the water??? Did the RPM’s max out like usual? I’m having issues with my 150 opti (2007), usually hits around 5400 rpm wide open and 49-50mph, but while on vacation for week in SD fishing, it would only top out at 4700 rpm and 41-42mph. Just curious if you had any of the same experiences.

Haven’t taken it to the shop yet.

The motor was running fine. I was downriggin for salmon and pretty much ran it at 1,000 rpm most of the day. Did a short 5500 RPM run to the dock at the end of the day. Nothing out of the ordinary. It seemed fine. So when the shop said there was a problem with it I was really surprised.

We have a cause for the powerhead failure. Apparently there is an air compressor that pushes the oil through the lines into the engine. the air compressor wasn’t working. Everything will be covered under warranty, but it will be 2 weeks before I get the boat back.
