I have a 16′ Starcraft and have been thinking about adding a kicker. How do I determine whether to get a long shaft or a short shaft?

    thanks!

The vast majority of boats that I have encountered, from smaller tin boats to 20-foot glass boats, work fine with a 20″ shaft.

    Jason,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have to admit I don’t know if that would be short or long. The ads I’m looking at don’t list the length in inches.

    thank again!

On T8s, there are two lengths available: 20 and 25″. I believe the same is true for Merc’s.

    20″+ transom = long shaft

    16″ transom = short shaft

if you put a short on a tall, and vice versa, you will have performance issues.

When I went through this, the feedback was about 70-30 in favour of the 20″ model over the 25″ model.

I went with the 25″ (XL) model on my Lund Pro V. The price was right and I didn’t want it to be too short when conditions got rough – which is when you really need it.

It works great, but it does drag in the water slightly at “plowing” speeds. Nothing serious, but you do have to be aware of it.

I think if I was to do it again, I’d look a little longer for a good deal on a 20″ model.
