If you like bird watching and feeding birds, the bird bath heater is a must have. I’ve been told by many people (that should know) that bluebirds don’t hang around in MN winters. Many times over the last five years I’ve had Bluebirds at my bird bath in the winter time, here in the St Croix Valley. On Christmas Day, I had five show up, although by the time I got the camera, only one was left. This picture was taken through a screened window.
If you like to see birds in the winter a $15. heater is the way to go. BUT make sure you keep enough water in the bath for the heater to keep it open. Otherwise the water will freeze and crack your bird bath
One other note. I’ve heard that you shouldn’t have heaters out because birds will take a bath, then when they fly away they freeze and die. In five years, the only bird that I’ve ever seen in the water in winter was a few starlings. I think we could stand to lose a few of those….
