a coworker of mine is having problems with his 01 90hp 2stroke yammy. when he first starts it off the launch, he has problems keeping it running – like its starving for gas. it eventually kills on him so he flips the ’emergency start’ switch under the cowling to open(?) and tries again and it runs. he doesnt want to leave it there because it doesnt perform well at open throttle. once he runs it for a while to warm it up on emergency start, he can flip the switch back to normal and it runs just fine. he can run it all weekend off and on with no problems.

any one else notice this with yammy 2strokers or any suggestions as to what to look for? i was looking for a few hints before he runs it into a repair shop. i’ve done some research, but havent seen much online.

i have an 2006 70hp yamaha 2 stroke, and it has been nothing but phenomenal for me. it of course has to warm up for a few seconds at a cold start, just like any two stroker, but thats about it.

Sounds a lot like a gas problem, check everything, filters, maybe it’s time to replace the gas line, clean carbs, get some fresh gas, maybe a fuel pump, don’t know about the smaller motors, but it’s a common replacement on the bigger yamaha’s.

Sounds like it could be the Prime start solenoid not working.

A service manual goes into detail on how to trouble-shoot them.Takes the place of a choke.
