Friend of mine at workhad the motor go on him, lost compression in one of the cylinders. He’s got a 78′ Evinrude 35hp, Think its worth getting rebuilt? if so, where is a good place? Or better off replacing? Thanks,

It kind of depends on what’s wrong with it. Things like head gaskets, cracked head and reed valves can be done somewhat cheap. A cracked block or piston rings is a lot more work. A similar used motor will still run about $1,000. I’ve seen ads on craigs list offering motor repair for older motors.

I was told parts for the 1980 and older Evinrudes were no longer available as of 3 years ago.

Whoever told you parts for Evinrudes before 1980’s are unavailable is full of it. We can still get parts for motors back into the ’60’s. Evinrude has a warehouse for “vintage parts” and we can get them. It may be a little longer on shipping time.

I think the 35hp is the same as my 1975 15hp and that the design did not change from ’72 or ’73 until some time in the mid ’90s. LOTS of parts available and since they are common motors most shops have the basic parts on the shelf. I’ve also had good luck at Twin City Outboard with used parts.
