flooded engine

    well i was out on opener on the croix, and apparently i flooded my engine, a guy told me to unplugg the gas cord and start it. i did that and the engine started. why does an engine flood and what procautions can i take to ensure the engine wont flood again. and is there anyting i should know about flooding engines. thanks, anthy help is much appreciated.

    Do you have to choke it manually? If so you may have over choked it.

    i push the key in to choke it. so if i choke it too much i can flood it.

    Yep! My first boat years ago had the same type of choke. I would always pump the fuel bulb from the tank and let it crank over a couple of time before hitting the choke. Then I would only choke it for a couple of seconds. Once you figure out what it takes you’ll get it started everytime. Also, once mine was warmed up I didn’t need to choke it the rest of the day.
