Evinrude Ficht Question

I have a 2002 Evinrude Ficht. Last year it started running really rough at idle and would even die when it was at idle. I took it in and the dealership put new plugs in it and it ran perfect. Now it is doing it again and I can’t believe that the plugs should be going bad that fast. Does anyone have any ideas what it may be. Top end is perfect and anything above idle it runs pretty smooth. Please let me know what you think it may be. It doesn’t throw any alarms at all. Thanks in advance for any help.

plugs….I had a the same problem with my Ficht, these expensive plugs seem to foul whenever. Also must make sure the plugs line up perfectly, sometimes if the dealer doesn’t know how to align these or forgets to can result in the plugs being fouled.
Also could be because oil is/was to rich.

Also don’t run at idle it too long. If it starts to run rough when idle take it out and try to blow the excess off of the plugs.

Indexing-Lining up the plug gap opening with the injector.

Brent- I still run an 04 Ficht and I like the motor but it does require new plugs once a year. I get my plugs from O’Rielly Auto Parts. They are the cheapest I could find. They do reccomend indexing them too. What I do is use a Sharpie marker to mark the gap on the plug. Then they need to be within 10 degrees or so of pointing at the injector. I bought some flat indexing washers from Speedwaymotors.com

If I can’t get a plug to fall into alignment with average torque I pry off the washer on the plug and use the indexing washers until they line up. These washers come in 3 different thickness’ and have worked great for me. Just be sure to take off the original washer when using the indexing washers.

I’ve heard from several people that it doesn’t matter if they are lined up or not. I think the $15 washers are worth the money to make sure they line up.

Another thing you should do to your Ficht is change the fuel filters every year.

PM me if you have any questions and I can give you a call.

That’s about the same as what I pay. I keep a spare set with me at all times.

The last time I did mine, I looked at the plugs that were already in and noticed that they were all marked with a magic marker. The odd thing was, they were all in different positions. None of them were lined up the same.
The shop that changed them the time before was a certified Evinrude dealer.
After doing some checking with an Evinrude mechanic who claims he has to go thru training every year, I find out
that in the fichts, it makes no difference. In the new evinrudes, Etec, it does make a difference. The plug must be aligned so that the open end is towards the injectors.

We changed mine and did not bother aligning them. I have not had any problems. I have a 2003 fight.

    I’ve never done it… So probably never….

I wouldn’t change them unless its ideling rough, unless you want to give o’rielys $80….

Better yet, give it to me!

I guess it’s overdue! 61 may have changed them, I’ll look to see if they appear new.

    Ben,
I took your advice and changed/indexed the plugs and put a fuel filter on. It is running perfect.

    Thanks!

My last boat had a 2001 175 Ficht that would experience the same thing (fouled plugs). The guy I bought it from worked for Bombardier and sent a retrofit kit with the motor (he didn’t have time to put it on). He said Fichts are notorious for fouled plugs based on the low oil/high oxygen mixture that blows directly on the plugs causing fouling. It usually occured at trolling/idling speeds and when under a heavy load. Anyway, I had the kit put on and no more changing plugs twice a year. I ran the boat the motor without replacing the plugs for 2 full seasons, before I upgrade to my ProV. I believe he said the kit was around $250 and it basically looked like a set of shields to block the fuel from direct contact on the electrodes. Similar to waht they are trying to achieve with the indexing process that really doesn’t work very well.

NKG’s is the way. $2.00 a plug at Oriely’s v.s. $5.00 for Champions. For all the bad rap that the FICTs get, I sure have liked my 99 Evinrude 115.
