I have a 1996 Mercury 175 EFI outboard and need some help replacing the impeller. I have taken the 4 bolts out of the foot and the case will not fall. Do I have to take the prop loose or any other connectors that would be holding it on?

I did mine over the winter, a 2002 Mercury 115 4stroke. It too would not drop after I removed the nuts. Turns out there is a bead of silcone in there to block the exhaust. I trimmed mine down to within about an inch or so of the floor and stomped on the ventilation plates until it broke free. Strange but it worked for me. Also make sure you’re shift linkage doesn’t need to be disconnected, mine has a coupler where the lower unit meets the outboard case.

Besides the bolt for the trim tab, there can also be a nut on the front part of the lower unit case.

There is an excellent article on this site about changing impellers, and also one on Bass Boat Central – I strongly encourage you to print these out to save yourself some headaches.

    Good luck.

That one cost me a phone call and a step back, let’s think this through again last night. Weird. I took that bolt out, the lower unit came right off.

The process got infinitely easier from that point.

Thanks Jon Jordan for the instructions!!!! Wife ran the trim switch, I held the motor in place and we had it done in less than one beer.

my ’99 175 EFI didn’t drop right away either, did take a bit of work, but she broke fee. I didn’t see anything keeping it sealed up, I did put a very thin line of silacone on when re-tightening. My biggest issue was that somehow the gear shifter when into gear (a very small small shift) and I couldn’t get the thing to line up. A budy looked over and asked what if? Sure enough. Edit: I used a chunk of 2×4 and hammered away on the wood.
