Garbage Disposal – Fish

Just got off the phone with my dad who is finishing a new cabin in northern ND.

He mentioned that he was going to install a fish cleaning station in the basement, 4 foot section of countertop, a sink, etc. The thing that caught my attention was that he was going to install a garbage disposal under the sink and just “do away” with the fish after cleaning.

Does anyone have any experience in doing so? Is this a good idea? He would not be putting a ton of fish in there, if I had to guess he’ll clean less than 100 per year.

Does it take a certain motor size to make sure they get ground up? Our lake has mostly smaller sized pike, some walleye, and some panfish/perch. The most common size of fish would be a 2-3 lb northern.

Anyone have some words of advice on this setup?

I don’t think each cabin has its own septic system. I believe it is a municipal sewer system.

    Thanks,

    Eric

Many ramps along the river in SD have this setup. I never got down and looked, but it was definitely a commercial grade machine. Tell him to be sure he keeps bleach handy to run down it after using for a weekend. Also run lots and lots of water through it.

Those things got pretty ripe by mid-august. But there were also a lot of guys who didn’t have a clue what they were doing with them.

If the waste is going to go into a septic system I would be careful on that one. Just my ho though.

Garbage disposals and septic systems don’t go very well together. I would buy him a new shovel and let him toss them in there.

I’ve always been told that disposals and septic systems don’t work, too.

If he does have a septic, here is InSinkErator Septic Garbage Disposal we use with our septic system, no issues …… yet.

I’ve personally found that a regular garbage disposal dose not chew up walleye skins……

    They are not food processors.

Why would you throw out the skin? That’s the best part of a eye!

They are a mess to keep clean and they have to be clean to keep the stink down. They have to be installed so they are solid. Grinding up a walleye/pike head makes them jump and twist.

I would opt for the new shovel.

That would be a pretty fast way to scale some panfish. Have never tried this or seen anyone do this before. I would go with a bigger disposal. Atleast 3/4 hp. Insinkerator is the way to go.

DITTO bleach screws up septic systems in a big hurry too. kill”s all the little microbe bugs that munch on the goodies. it will also eat up parts of the disposal over time
