After a couple of misfortunes today I need to get a new axle for my karavan trailer. (When the bearing blew this morning the races cut grooves in the axle and rounded the shoulders over that the bearing rides against and it would have to be turned down with a lathe.) I am going to buy a heavier axle. the old axle is 2200 lb and the one I ordered is a 3500 lb axle. Does any one know why I can’t or shouldn’t do this? I think that my trailer was a little light (2400 lb trailer with 1850 crestliner, 135 opti, and alot of gear).

I did the same with my Shorelander. I just got the spindles and a little grinding and welding good as new. Replacing the whole axle is easy to do to. I’m a firm believer you can’t go to heavy on the axle.

Just make sure your comunicating effectively with who ever you order it from. Very critical if you have drops or offsets. They guys at Tenn Trailers were in such a hurry to get me a new axle shipped out so I would not miss a tourny, and I ended up with an over sling in lieu of an undersling. The boat rides about 5″ higher with the springs on top of the axle. I just need to get someone to weld the plates on the bottom so I can lower it down.

I did some quick checking around (and if my assumptions are correct on you model boat) I would be a little ticked off at who ever set that rig up. Based on boat, engine, full tank of gas, 2 gallons of oil, (2) 18# anchors, (3) batteries, bow mount minn kota 80# maxxum, and 150lbs of misc gear, ice, drinks, electronics…. I am just over 2350lbs

I would seriously think about replacing that trailer with a new heavier trailer. You would be much further ahead in the long run.

I will be looking at replacing. I might need some advice on what to get. I think you need to add the trailer weight to the total gvw soo the total weight would be 2800 lbs. but for now 200 dollars for the axle and new u bolts will get me back to the water or a boat dealer. I’m just happy I was only 5 miles from home when it bomb shelled

I replaced my Axle AND went with one that had a larger GVW. I called and talked to a gentlemen at Karavan in Rice Lace, WI and told me that my boat should not be on that trailer. That is what you get for not being a completely informed buyer at a big boat show.

I went bigger and have not had any problems since. I too did think about getting a new trailer, but this happened on the way back from Erie.
