Junk or fixable?

I have a Eagle cuda 168 depth finder that has been acting eradically and think I discovered the problem. After inspecting the cable I discovered it had been smashed by the trolling motor shaft and has a split in the cable. The wires seem to be in tact, but after wrapping it with black electrical tape and testing it on the water, I still get strange depth readings (fluctuates somtimes to over 600ft in 20ft of water). I was checking for a new transducer but they seem to be around $60 for this unit. I can purchase a new unit (same version) for around $80. Should I junk the unit and and buy something better for the money or invest in the transducer? Is there a way to cut the bad section out and rewire it or will this cause abnormal problems also? Thanks and hope someone can help answers some of these questions.

Only you can answer this question.

You can slice it if your careful. If it is above the water line it makes it a little easier, if not then make sure you waterproof the splice the best you can and then some. There are some members here that have done it before and it worked fine after they were done.

I have fixed many cables using those instructions carefuly ,all units have worked just fine afterwards.

I even cut mine on purpose to run it up thru thaft t/m shaft

make sure to check ebay for a transducer, you should be able to get one for cheap on there.

The other thing I’ve seen is a poor battery causing problems, it wasn’t bad enough to have issues starting to motor, but wasn’t giving quite enough volts to work properly.

You are making these observations with the ducer in the water right? (sounds a bit like a stupid question…)

Thanks for the replies and ideas. I did have the transducer in the water when it was having issues. I ran it for 4 hours and it would periodically start reading inacurate depths. The unit would work fine for a few minutes then start acting up, then working fine. It did this for 4 hours on both trips to the river. I took the advice and instructions from this forum and made a reapair to the wires. hopefully it will work when I take it out to the river next trip. If not…. time for a new bow mount DF. Thanks again for the help.
