I bought an used 2006 150 E-tec. It misses in mid-range powering up or when loading oin the trailer. Starts instantly and idles w/o missing a beat. Runs fine at cruise. Anyone had the same problem? I’m waiting for the warranty to transfer. Thanks

the dealer should have an update for it. it will fix the mid range miss. what oil are you running? you should be running XD100 if you run it under 40′ temps.

Here is a pretty good etec forum. Do a search and I think this type of thing has been discussed. I have a 60HP that was acting similar. turned out to be the EMM (Computer board) not functioning correctly. Sent to factory and had it reprogrammed. Solved the problem. I would also suggest having your dealer check for any software updates. The last suggestion would be to ask the dealer about a TPS calibration. (TPS=Throttle position sensor) Search all of these things on the link above.
Good LuckMarch 23, 2009 at 2:49 am #761365an easy thing to try before taking it to a dealer is puttin some new spark plugs in. i went through about 4 sets last year on my 225 ho. soon as it starts hesitating a little bit i swap out plugs and she is good as new
March 23, 2009 at 1:28 pm #761433These are all good suggestions. Take it in to a dealer and have them hook it to the laptop and check it over once the warranty transfers.
April 1, 2009 at 11:44 pm #764896Thanks for the help,…a quick update. Dealer did not get any codes and software had been updated. They said the plugs were “burned” at 149 hrs. They test drove it,…its better but still has a hesitation around 1800 rpms that they attributed to a switch in the type of fuel injection between low and high rpms. They said plugs are not warranted even though it VERY specifically stated on their web site as not needing plugs for 3 yrs/300 hrs. It appears that I bought a tempermental motor that is under engineered. Its back to Yamaha for me !!
April 2, 2009 at 12:37 am #764920The no maintenance gimmick always did bug me.
What are you going to do trade/sell the boat or just swap the Engine. What a hassle. Good Luck!

Who are you kidding?
I use to be the program manager for their fuel delivery system through a supplier.I can tell you all the dirty reasons why they are nick-named “opti-pop!”
Some motors are very good, others are not. Luck of the draw with an Opti.
April 2, 2009 at 3:28 am #764984i have always liked evinrude outboards…but I have a Yammi on my new boat, and after running it for two years, Yamaha now has a reliable future customer.

I grew up on OMC.
I have been a Yami owner with no complaints, it was all good, maybe even great.
I’m currently an E-Tec owner that is very impressed and frequently pissed off.
I offer the explanation to my passengers, that this motor, with the onboard computer and diagnostic read out capabilities, is often smarter than I am.
This motor protects it’s self from all forms of abuse, misuse and/or damage.
Unfortunately, it has let me down in several possible life vs death, or at least very adverse conditions.
The dealer seems to be able to tell me that i have tried to start the motor, while in gear, exactly 9 time since the last diagnostic assesment, but can not tell me why the motor kicks into “safe mode” every time I take it on a very large, partially frozen and notoriously dangerous late season body of water.
I absolutely love the performance of this motor when the conditions are perfect!
Every time I put myself in an adverse senario, this motor lets me down…
Now that that’s off my chest, I’m still torn.
I live 5 blocks from pool 2 and would never trust this motor on the river. Kind of disappointing…
Good luck

April 2, 2009 at 2:44 pm #765086The motor is 3 years old. Was the 3 yr maint. done? That includes spark plugs and more..
You purchased this motor used, do you know the history of how it was ran and treated?
Evinrude will pay warranty on spark plugs if the hours are low.April 2, 2009 at 3:00 pm #765092Hi norseman:
Just say no to cap locks – lol! Hard to read and we all think you’re screaming.

April 2, 2009 at 3:02 pm #765093Gary,
For the 150hp on down, those motors have a bullet proof history.
I believe the problems with the 200 and 225 hp motors has been worked out. One thing merc did do well for most was stand behind the warranty.
I would not hesitate to put any Merc on any new boat!

Do you use a different finger when you are pi$$ed than you do when you are happy?

I’ve read elsewhere of this happening in cold weather, it was cured by using the XD100 oil.April 16, 2009 at 7:13 pm #769113Quote:

I had the same issue with my ficht, changed over to amsoil during the cold months, no more problems.

April 16, 2009 at 8:28 pm #769136My ficht was starting to do the same thing on P4 last week. I had a spare set of plugs with me and switched them out. It ran better but was still missing at midrange speeds. I got home and put a new fuel filter in it and went to squeeze the bulb to fill the new filter and discovered the bulb was leaking gas (probably sucking in air at higher rpm’s). I ran the boat that evening and it ran nearly perfect. I’m installing a new bulb tonight and figure the problems should all be solved now.

Putting a Yamaha on the back of my boat did wonders for all the problems with the E Tech. Have not had a issue since. My motor was a 75 hp tiller. Even if there was no issues with the e tech in this range I would still go with Yamaha. It is just a much more user friendly motor to run.
April 20, 2009 at 3:25 am #769819I tried the opti after being a long time omc guy; traded it in 6 months later. The motor never ran right despite multiple trips to the dealer. A 250 e-tec finally solved the problem.
