I’ve got a 16 1/2′ Lund with a Honda 40HP tiller w/ power trim. When I’m with the wife or grandkids, I’m fine. It puts enough weight up front and the boat will plane out OK. But, when I’m by myself, the boat will porpose through the water. I was thinking of fashioning a wedge between the transom and the motor. I was told at Gander Mtn. that all I need is a “Sting Ray” hydrofoil. I need some insite on either one of these ideas and if the Sting Ray is the way to go, should I go with the S.R. I or S.R. II ? ? ?

Does it porpoise when you’re trimmed all the way down by yoorself? I put a bag of sand up front in mine to level it off.

I’m not a big hydrofoil guy and I have owned them in the past.
I was experiencing your same problem with my current rig. I had the dealer drop the motor back and install the aluminum wedges.
    They work great.
I later figured out that the motor was mounted too low on the transom as well.
The dealer moved her up a couple of notches and another significant improvement was made.
Jack plates are an awfull nice option as well!
    Good luck
    cheers

We put on a new 40 4-st on our xpress db last summer it bounced with me only in it. Moved the deep cycle battery 3/4 to the front and put a steel disk (wrapped in cloth) about 40 lbs in the bow compartment, problem solved.

Do you remember where your dealer got the wedges, or are they something that have to be made at a machine shop? I thought of just using a solid piece of oak made into a 1-1 1/2″ wedge covered with a piece of .100 aluminum or steel. At least to try, until I find the exact fit that works.

I had a 1650 Lund Preditor with a 60 Evinrude T&T tiller. I beleive in hydrofoils it made a huge difference on my 1650. Getting up and on plane in skinny water with out the hydrofoil would not happen. Cured any porpusing issues I had unless I over trimmed. Getting up on plane with four people in the boat was way better. Before the hydrofoil took half a river to get up on plane with four on board.
