Hi Derek, Let me just say this. I switched to Amsoil on my “94 Geo Prism because at 96,000 miles I decided that it was such a good piece of transportation that I would like to keep it until it died! I researched a lot and what I found out was: if you change your oil every 3,000 miles or if you go to synthetic it is not much difference. However, if you want to drive the motor till it drops at 200,000 miles synthetic is better. I was undecided. Then two years ago when I took my Merc 90 hp in for an oil change in the spring my dealer asked if I had run it in the winter. I said, “no but why”? He said, “that if I had run the motor in the winter they would have put in synthetic”. I decided then that since my motor on my Geo did not have a heater system that it must be better to run synthetic. I put it in my Geo and asked my wife to see if there was anything different in the car when she went on a trip to Rochester. I did not tell her what was changed. She told me that the car ran quieter! I also know that my start ups in the winter are quieter. So what do I know? Actually nothing but this has been my experience. I also switched to Amsoil in my 2001 90 hp Merc 4 stroke and there is no smoke on starting. What does this mean? I’m not sure but I think that it is good.
