I know there has been info on here about many hand held GPS. Just wondering about the H2O. I have heard good things about using it on the water (lake maps etc). Just wondering if anyone has comments about it for use in truck when driving. Any answer are welcome. I am just starting to look and have considered the nuvi 500 also.

It will not give you turn by turn, if that is what you are looking for. However, with the right Lakemaster chip, you will have roads displayed. I’m not sure if it’s roads for only the state the lakes/chip is for??

The new Sierra model has turn by turn, with an optional upgrade. It’s also compatible with the Nav/Lakemaster chips, however they are in micro-SD. Which to my knowledge are not readily available as of yet. You are also talking twice the money. I’m also concerned with how the touch screen performs in cold weather. My limited experience has not been good with touch screens in sub freezing weather.

It’s OK for driving when you have a Lakemaster chip in it otherwise the background maps aren’t all that gerat and you won’t get any turn by turn directions.

I just bought an H2Oc from Wade at JollyAnn in the last 30 days and have been playing around with it before heading out on the water. I bought a Navionics chip
to go with it. I did not buy any additional Lowrance mapping software. The base map in the unit with highways etc is not good….very crude, lacking detail. The unit
did get me within +/- 4 ft of a known bench mark so I
have confidence that when I set a waypoint I will be able
to get back to within casting distance of it. That’s what
I bought it for. You are able to do routes and trails with
it….which is basically just navigating from waypoint to waypoint. I don’t think it will do turn by turn directions
with the base mapping, maybe with additional software. I’ve
heard thru other posts that the Lowrance XOG is pretty
good in a vehicle and it will take the Navionics chip but
I didn’t go that route because it didn’t appear to be
WAAS enabled or have a port to attach an external antenna.

    For what its worth.

you can use it for navigation in the truck,(i have a lakemaster chip in mine) it will basically allow you to look and see where you are, but it is not very “friendly” to use for directions, versus say a Tom Tom.

put it this way, if you get lost, you will find your way home. but if you want to get to a specific address in downtown minneapolis, this is not the unit for that.

i bought a Tom Tom One at best buy around xmas for 75 bucks and it is by far one of the best purchases i’ve ever made!

I’ve got the Lowrance Map Create on mine and its OK to use, but it just won’t navigate. If its something you plan on using quite a bit, get a Tom Tom.

If you get the Mapcreate Software you will have road detail but as the others have said it does not offer turn-by-turn direction. The Lakemaster chips will give you road detail for that particular state as well.

If you want a GPS for road use, do yourself a huge favor and get one of the Garmin Nuvi GPS units. You can get them for a song these days and they will give you everything you need on the road. The maps are all preloaded for the entire 48 states and they have turn-by-turn voice directions.

If you want a unit for the ice or water, go with the H2O.

thanks for all the help. I would most likely use it 95% on the lake, but I was hoping I could find one that I could use on the lake most the time, but then switch over to the truck to put in addresses etc when traveling. Might have to wait for my “perfect” match.
