I’ve been hearing differing opinions on the new square tubing Otter is now using. Anyone have a new model that has the square tubing? I *might* replace my ‘ole Fishtrap this year… and Otter has been at the top of my list.

I guess the issues range from difficulty of assembly (could be due to the fact of people NOT lubricating the tubes correctly). Another has been people have had to do some grinding to “de-burr” the tubes. To me, that doesn’t sound right, as for that kind of $$$ for a portable, one would think that it would come from the factory with a better finish.

Just curious to hear anyones experiences.

    Hey Travis ,

I haven’t goten my ’04 Otter as of yet but will be soon. What I will do is take a step by step picture sequence and post it here on the Outdoor Gear forum…If i run into any troubles it will be shown here…Last year I did a post very similar in nature to this and it was slick, slick slick !!! I must have uploaded a dozen pictures and took each step of assyembly and illistrated it on this web site..

Look for it in the near future.

And if anyone has a specific question for the Otter Outdoors people here would be a great place to ask. My guess is that they will answer your questions right here.

Yup… I remember that “how to” post you had last year. Excellent stuff! Heck… I may just have a new one after this weekend when I hit the Ice Fishing show. Hmmmm… I need some good excuses to save an ass chewing from the “significant other”.

I have the new 2004 Otter with the square tubes.
    * check out my new product review on the 2004 Otter here at in-depthangling.
I think the key with the functions of the tubing on either a square tube or round one will be the need to lube it once in a while. WD-40 works great for this, just spray the inside tube and it will slide up and down with ease!!!!!

I have got my new Otter together today. Last year it seemed like their was a batch of poles that stuck more than other ones. It acted like the die was dull that was used to punch the holes. I noticed no catch at all on this years model. Like Bobber, and the directions, say, use some WD 40 to lube the poles. The fastening system for the canvas to the sled takes less than a minute to complete. You shouldn’t get any drafts at all. They also have all 5 holes that you need to drill in the sled premarked so you can’t mess up. This weekend will be a good one to check them out. As stated the St Paul Ice Fishing Show runs Fri-Sun. Joe’s Sporting Goods is also having an event this weekend with reps on hand. Cabellas has an event as well that runs Fri-Sun with a ton of reps there. I’ll be there for sure Fri, and probably all weekend. If you make it, stop by and say hi.

    Thanks for the tips guys!
Looking forward to getting my new 04 Otter to hit the ice as soon I can get the boat tucked away.
Winter of 2002 was my first year in an Otter and I have not been in anything else since! They make the best shack on the ice as far as I am concerned. Looking forward to utilizing all the great features that were incorporated for 2004. Otter took a great product and made it even better. That makes all of us that much more efficient on the ice and in turn helps us all catch more fish and staying comfortable in the process!
