    Folks,

With the local fishing show starting this weekend I’m thinking about seeing if I can find myself a new jigging rod. It would be a multi purpose rod, get used on the local lakes and the Wi and Mississippi rivers.

I’ve been looking at the Fenwick Elite TEch, St Croix Avid, Walleye Series and the legend elite. I’m leaning mostly toward ths St. Croix rods.

Any reason I should gow with one rod over another?

Has anyone fished a Legend Elite yet?

    Thinking maybe a 1 piece 6’6″ MLF

    Thanks,

    Chris

Check out the limit creek rods they are a multi purpose but for a reasonable price much cheeper then the st croix. st croixs are a great choice but for a higher price point I love my limit creek and able to buy a great reel with the savings. just a thought.

    Chris,
Do you primarily use hard line or mono ? What is the most common jig weight range? Do you have a primary presentation preference ? Vertical , casting , dragging or equal useage ?

I was in the exact same position last sportshow season and wound up getting a 6’8″ St. Croix Avid, medium action, extra fast. I really like it for jigging, which was my primary objective! Also used if a few times wacky rigging for bass. My 2 cents.

I fished with one of Deans legend extremes yesterday and had a hard time giving it back. I think I found a use for my tax return. It was the 6 9 mlxf and was for sure the best jigging rod I have ever laid my hands on. Stop in and try one for yourself.

    Dean,

I use braid and mono usually keep a spool loaded with each handy. In terms of weights for this rod I would see it being up to about 3/8 on the high end.

I could see myself using if for dragging, casting, vertical jigging the works.

I already have a 6’3″ Tournament Series MXF that I like for the heavier jigging its just a touch stiffer than I really like for jigging with lighter stuff. I tend to lean on that rod for my river work or a 7′ Avid of similar action.

The staple of my guiding/tournament rod collection for typical walleye pitching and dragging has been the Tournament Series 68MXF rod. A great all-around rod that works for pitching, dragging (out of the back of the boat), or even vertical.

I have to admit that after using some Legend Extremes this fall/winter, I’ll be adding a pair of those to my collection. Unbelievably light, fantastic sensitivity, plenty of muscle in all the right places. Simply awesome.

Since you already have the 6’3″ mxf, that will handle the heavier weigts just fine.Overall,if I only could have one action to do everything I would probably suggest a 6’6″ med action. But based on you already owning the 6’3 mxf I think you would really fill the gap quite nicely with a 6’9″ mlxf. A 6’6″ ml is just going to be a touch light for the versatility you are speaking of.My gut tells me you are a candidate for the 6’9mlxf.Great for hard line and mono for light jigs pitching and dragging. The XF is a bit more rod than the ml you mentioned earlier.

As far as which model is right for you ? It is absurd for anyone to assume which brand best fits your budget & comfort range. All of the models mentioned in this thread are viable quality products. For that very reason is why we do so many on water demos. The elite is very difficult to justify on line or on paper. With that said,I am personally very biased and that is the only rod model I use.Do I need it? No, but fishing is virtually my only hobby besides cookies. For me,the Elite is one of if not the lightest most sensitive rod made in the world. That doesn’t mean that is what you should decide on in this case, and that is why we have several of the other options available. If you ever demo one though, you might just end up taking it home with you!

    Amen Deano!
That was an excellent explanation…even after many years of fishing, it boils down to your style, type of fishing conditions, and level of confidence/expertise.
My three personal Walleye rods for jigs/blades to 1/2oz are
    LE 63MXF….vertical
    LE 66MLF….braid
    EX 69MLXF..Mono/Braid

    Guiding…I add (2)Limit Creek 69MLFs & (2)AVS 68 MXFs
These also double fine for Smallies

I use the Legend Tournaments in the 6’9″ MLXF (I think) and they are great and do everything I want way beyond my abilities. That being said when I picked up the Legend Elite I couldn’t believe how light it was and the balance was perfect. It is truly an amazing product and I have been avoiding it because I WAS happy with my set-ups till it came along. Your best bet is to head to Evert’s and actually touch and feel the rods you are thinking about. Narrow it down and then give one an on-the-water test. The rod is really the key to your whole presentation so why not get what suits your style? Good luck and have fun with your selection.

If you decide to go with a legend elite give Sportsmans Whse a buzz. The store in Woodbury has some smoking prices on the legend elites right now. If I remember right there were a couple 6’6″ mlf left.

I haven’t run across any of the LE (Legend Elite) with the MLXF action in 6’6″ or 6’9″. Seems like the only rods I see in that size range are MLF unless you go the extreme route. For those who have fished the extreme rods I have heard that the guides are really noisy and they don’t seem to cast as far. What about the split grips? Those OK to fish with?

Do your experiences bear this out?

Preposterous. The guides are not the least bit noisy (with mono or braid), and they certainly don’t hinder casting distance.

The sound is different than everyday guides. If they are standing up in the boat, the wind will make a whistle like noise.

Casting distance ?Just the opposite and actually is substantially longer casts are achieved, especially with light jigs. You really just need to fish one to make your own judgment.I have had well over a hundred on water demos with these rods, none of these concerns were mentioned.

    Dean,

If I was closer to you I would be stopping to test drive one of the extremes. I wish someone down this way (Madison WI) had a similar program.
