Hey guys I have a question about trolling reels. I am going to be buying 2 cabelas depth master trolling rods for planner board fishing. I will be buying a rod/reel combo. Would you guys rather have a daiwa accudepth linecounter reel or a cabelas depth master gold reel and why you would rather have that one. Thanks a lot for the help guys.

I’ve never used the cabelas reel so I can’t say I like the accudepth better, but my accudepth reels have treated me well.

own both reals….everything is going all Diawa for me for quality reasons! Lots of cheap parts on the Cabelas reels that I am not real happy with..line counters are not the most trust worthy either!

I have had the level wind mechanism on the Cabela’s reels fail on me. They will replace the reel without hassle, but it’s a rather common problem.

Having said that, I don’t think I have used the Cabela’s gold series. I don’t know if they are built better.

The newer AccuDepth Plus reels have been a nice upgrade to the previous version.

I personally would pay for the AccuDepth upgrade on the Cabela’s combos.

I have used both and would spend a little more and try to find combo’s that come with diawa sealines on them. It’s going to cost more but way less hassels in the long run. Those cheaper reels have a lot of plastic parts that will only cause problems over time. Also the drags can be a bit sketchy at times.

I have and use both. I have had no problems with either reel. The depthmaster gold series is cabelas more expensive trolling reel. Sounds like most are having problems with them, but I have not. I have used them for three seasons. I would buy another.

    Good luck

I’ve had issues with the Cabelas reels as well. I have a couple Daiwas too and I think the clicker on one broke.

I wouldn’t buy either one of those reels. Especially if you plan to spend any amount of time trolling.

Definitely upgrade to the Diawa Sealine SG27LCA or equivalent.

In the long run, you’ll be glad you did.

I agree with Joel, when fishing with planer boards the amount of line you have out behind the board is critical….in fact its everything. If your off by a mere foot it can cause a lot of fouled lures vs having your lure run true. Upgrade to a minimum of the Diawa Sealines, otherwise go for the Shimano Tekota if money allows. The Shimano reels have the best drag on the market. Worth every penny in my opinion. You will be happier with the upgrades in the long run.

Ditto here. Have had the sealines for 9 years now and have only had 2 reels have problems in that time frame and they were easy fixes. Mine have had a bit of use over the years and keep right on working

You can pitch jigs and plastics on line counters

    Good catch Moreyes!
Pretty sure the only thing I’ve ever used a line counter reel for was trolling.

If you are going to pull boards I would highly suggest going to the Diawa Sealine 47 series reel over the smaller reels.More torque, bigger gears & better drag. I like to run 17’s for braid,27’s for mono & 47’s for lead & boards. Now thats just my $.02 Best of luck fishing! WHITE TIP

Daiwa Sealine 27s. I’ve got a lot of miles on mine and they have stood up to a lot of abuse. Never an issue with the Sealines. Had problems with the old accudepths. I would spend the extra for Sealines, especially if they are going to get a lot of use.

DM Gold’s are heavier in comparison, and if you plan on putting lead core on them, that makes it even worse.

I have 5 LC47’s and have used them for quite a few years and I have never had any problems. Great, fear-priced, reliable reels.

I am the only guy I know who is having problems with the Sealine reels. I have 3 (three!) sealine-17s that have crapped out in the last 18 months. I admit to being an avid troller, but I’m not THAT hard on my gear.

If anyone has a good alternative to the sealines, I’m all ears

I have three GT series Penn reels that I’ve used for years. They are solid and reliable reels IMO. Never had a problem with them. I plan on picking up a couple more this year. They now have line counters available, but I have no experience with them.

Shimano Tekota 300 LC Jason, I could loan you one until end of May for a Test Drive! Let me know!

EDIT: The Tekota 500LC makes a great Lead Core Reel Also available for ya!

I too have the cabelas Line counters… Looking to upgrade prior to this season, does anyone have any input on the Abu Garcia line counters?? I had a chance to use them during a couple FLW tournaments, and they seem to be nice reels, real smooth feeling to them. The ones I used were all mono or braid, so I don’t know if they make a model capable of handling lead core. A

    Anyone use the Abu’s???

Yup, sure do, they work great with 1/16 and 1/32oz jigs .

All kidding aside, I have done a bit of trolling in my days on the river and those diawa’s have held up great in my boat.

I agree 100% with Cal and Rob! I have and have used several Sealines (27s and 47s) and I had a couple of depthmasters too. They can get the job done. However, once you try a tekota you will understand why they cost a little more $ and then you will justify why they are worth every penny. I’m in the middle of swapping out my sealines and will eventually have all Tekotas.
