I have a 16′ Modified V jon boat…other than shallow water…would there be any issues with running a long shaft on her? It is going to need bolted on..so I may be able to fudge an inch or 2…anyone doing (or have tryed) it? Thanks A.J.

You will have increased drag from more of the motor being in the water, and that will effect your top speed, and how fast your get up on plane. Now to what degree that will be effected is subject to your boat. I’d give it a go!

I also made a custom jack plate on my boat to raise the engine a couple inches since i ran rivers most of the time and it worked great.

I do it with one of my boats. It is a Lowe 1648M same description as yours 16 feet modified V and it is 48″ wide on the floor aft. I think the beam is 60″. I run a 1986 30hp evinrude on it, and it will do about 30 mph. I really have to look out for the shallow areas when river fishing. I check ebay once in a while for the parts to convert it to short shaft (15″) to buy new would be about $300.

A friend of mine raised his up a couple of inches by useing a cut up hocky stick as a spacer on top of the transom.

Last summer we went from a short shaft 25 to a long shaft 40 on our 16 ft express mod v and we had a welder raise the transom 4 inches he used 2″ square alum tubes, stacked them and welded them all together, that transom will never give way.

    Garvi,

Mine is only rated 40 for a non tiller model… Any issues with that. I’ve been wanting a faster rig. I run a 30 horse Johnson on mine short shaft. I only get 23 mph with just me in it.

We went with the 40 merc 4-stroke.

The 2 main reasons we went up to a 40 was #1, more power to get the boat on plane with 3 guys and a couple of dogs and our duck hunting gear. #2 is we wanted trim which means a long shaft only. That boat really moves when I’m just fishing in it, as a mater of fact it’s sort of scary and I don’t run it full bore to much in the summer, but man it was sweet this duck season.
