Legend Tournament Walleye vs. St. Croix Avid

I’ll start by saying I’m a huge fan of St. Croix rods. I have several Avids ranging from 5’9″ jigging rods to 7’6″ rigging rods, as well as a few casting rods for bottom bouncing. I also have a 7’6″ MLF Legend Tournament that I like.

I have been so impressed with the Avids that I’m not sure the Legend Tournaments are worth the extra money. What do others think? Are the extra features the Legend Tournament has worth the extra money?

I’m going to be adding a couple of more rods to my collection and want some opinions if I should go with the Avid or the Legend Tournament. The rods I am considering would be the 6’9″ MLXF Avid, the 6’8″ MXF Legend Tournament Walleye, or the 6’9″ MLXF Legend Tournament Bass. All of these would be used for mainly river fishing walleyes.

    Thanks.

Using St.Croix rods myself, I feel the avids provide the best deal for the money. I’m sure if you were blind folded, handed each rod to fish they feel very much alike.

I have fished St. Croix rods since I was very young…now I am over 60 years and have eight years of Guiding under my belt, with St.Croix Avids as my choice of Guiding rods, primarily Walleye and Smallmouth Bass.
Through 2008 I might agree with Jim, as they improved the AVS line as far as carbon content…the difference was not profound.
But the 2009 Legend TWS and TBS series now has the same SCV VI butt section as the Elite and Extremes along with the ART™ and IPC® technologies fused into a SCIV upper blank making these a WHOLE NEW CAT!
Several IDO Guides I have talked to are very pleased with them…I am holding off on my 2009 rod purchase until I get to test drive one at Everts in a few weeks…

BTW….My go to rod choices include most of the models you have mentioned…James used a TWS 76MLXF in the new Wingdam walleye video…thats one I am lookin at close!

I use all St.Croix rods in my guide boats, and there is NO QUESTION that the New St.Croixs LATEST AND GREATEST will at least be in my hands!! Dean ALWAYS takes care of you. Oh Dean?? Only a couple months away from bending those rods over!!

In my opinion, since the new design of the Avid, which are much lighter, and the actions improved, the gap between the two lines are much narrower than the pre updated Avids.I really noticed an improvement of the New 6’8″ MXF Avid as compared to the old version.

BTW, Mr Daze…..time for you to be doing your full size fish pole conditioning workouts.

    Dean,

How big is the difference in sensitivity between the new series 6’8″ MXF Avids, and the same size Legend Elites/Legend Extremes?

    Thanks!

Sensitivity…significant indeed.Necessary? Well that is up to the angler. What I can share that I have experienced is the weight difference and action of the rod performs to another level that not very many people ever have the opportunity to experience. It sure is fun to see the look on peoples faces when they bring back an Elite from a on water demo. I would suggest you evaluate for yourself side by side, then you can answer your own question with complete confidence and satisfaction with your investment.
