I fish mainly for Walleye and Crappie both lake and river. If you had a $1000 to spend towards the best fish finder to be mounted onto your boat, which one would it be? I’d like to get a few good ideas then I’ll check them out.

I’d probably be looking at the Humminbird 917 series or the 797 series.

Right now, last years’ Lowrance units are being blown off the shelves to make room for the new HDS units. Cabelas has had some good buys, as has Jolly Ann Marine, an IDO sponsor. Jolly Ann features free shipping and awesome customer service. You could easily get a large screen sonar/GPS combo for under 1K, and apply the savings towards the map chip of your choice.

If I were going to spend 1K, however, I’d be looking HARD at the Humminbird 798C2-SI side imaging sonar/GPS combo. Save a couple hundred $$ and get the unit without the pre-loaded maps. Side imaging will change the way you fish!

(Edit: Smackem, back in my college days, I used to date a gal from Marshalltown. Nice place!)

If it were me I would look hard at the 798 as others have mentioned. A great unit with some outstanding technology.

What’s a good price on the 798? I think that side finding deal would be great for bass fishing weed edges.

I think they’re right around $1000 at most places now.

It’s worth your time to contact Jolly Ann Marine. With no tax outside of Iowa and free shipping, buying from Wade can be a quick way to keep more of your cash in your pocket.

I’ve found them on-line for about $850 w/o the chips

    Thanks Jason!

Jolly Ann has the 798 for $930 shipped. I’ve got an LCX-27C combo with dual frequency ducer for $770 shipped too. Both great units.

My history is with lowrance and you wouldn’t go wrong with the 27 and have $ left over after getting the chip.
