Do the newer cameras work in low light better than older models? I found a VS460 priced right and I like the fact that it has the rotating camera but I could do without that if VS380 is gonna give me a much better view in certain cases. Should I go with the old or spring for the new?

YES! Dramatically different! There are only three cameras that “work” on the market that I know of..the VS380, VS820 and the VS825c. All three have the Low Light Technology which sets them apart from the competition AND other Marcums

My Marcum 500 is and was a very nice camera, but compared to the new line up…they can’t be compared at depth or at night.

I have a 380 and I can’t believe how much better it is compared to the older cameras. Using it side by side with an Aquaview I had almost 40 min. more viewing after the Scouts picture disappeared, and when I did turn on the lights I could still see almost as good. I used it up at Lake of The Woods, during the day in 15 feet of water I could see my lure and the fish about 4 feet away. At night I had to move it up to about 2 feet but I could see my lure and there was no snow to look thru. In 25 feet of water over soft bottom during the day I could see bottom with the light on but that was it

Spring for the new, and here’s why.

The new manta head has a SONY Super HAD camera inside of it, which dramatically increases the duration of use, esp. during low-light periods. Think of the iris inside your eye, which opens/closes to adjust your pupil to the amount of available light. This camera works the same, allowing the best viewing during low-light, and preventing washout during the brightest of conditions.

On a 380, the camera itself is by far the most expensive component because of the advanced technology. In the end, all this mumbo-jumbo simply means you’ve got a dramatically better picture!

I bought a VS380 this fall and love it. It is way better than any cameras that I have compared it to. I am very impressed with the new Sony camera.
