Just wondering if anyone knows if there are any distinct advantages with the Terrova versus the Powerdrive V2? I’m upgrading my TM this year and am trying to decide between the two.

    thanks

I have the v2 70lb and am not overly pleased with it. First off I had to replace the whole unit because of a bent propeller shaft. Now im on my 3rd pedal. The first one a control board was junk, the replacement same thing. This fall the pedal froze because of a terrible throttle design. If any water gets into or around the magnet you will have problems. Also the foot responce is fairly slow and the micro adjust doesnt work as designed. Its also hard to use the intermintent power pedal and steer. The auto pilot works good. One other complaint is the stow and release mechanism. You have to bend down to hit the button to let it down. when you pull it up same thing you have to bend down and pull the whole thing up. I think the unit would be fine for lake fishing but for big rivers not so much. Maybe i just have a lemon on my boat but i would definetly go with the terrova.

The Terrova is a great unit. I love the new design. It is the better of the two if you can spend a little extra cash.

one thing i noticed while using the powerdrive is that the motor always turns at the same speed and sometimes you want to “whip” the motor around quickly. have they designed for that in the terrova or is that a functionality you only get with Maxxum like motots?

Jason I have no info on the Terrova, I do have a Power Drive but not the V2 the only problem I have had with mine is I had to have the foot pedal replaced. Which ever unit you go with get the CoPilot I use mine more than the pedal and it is a good back up if you pedal goes bad. The other thing that I love about the CoPilot is that I can run the trolling motor from anywher in the boat. Check with Wade at Jolly Ann Marine & Outdoors you will not find a better price anywhere and his service is second to none.

Wade can correct me if I am wrong but yes I do belive that the Maxxum has faster response time, the advantage of the Power Drive is that you do not have to constantly have your foot on the pedal like you do with the Maxxum.

First off, no the terrova or pd does not have a quick turn deal. It goes at the same speed no matter what. The Terrova is a better unit in my opinion than the pd. you have the option with the terrova to use the left/right steering like the pd, or the forward/back like a maxxum. if one does go out the other usually still works. Also the speed adjustment is much easier to work with than the pd slide deal. Terrova’s have a dial that is much friendlier with boots on.
Also the co-piliot is a good deal if you can spend the extra cash on it, you will find it useful at times.

My boat came with a PD and after a few years I decided to upgrade. Ther Terrova was just coming out but I decided to go with the Maxxuum and couldn’t be happier. The response time is like night and day between the PD and the Max. We mostly drag or vertical jig for walleye and the Maxxuum is perfect for us. I can see where other presentations would cater more to the Terrova but for us I wouldn’t trade my Maxxuum for any other trolling motor

I know this isn’t one of the motors you were inquiring about, but I went with a motor guide digital tour on my boat. It is a cable steer like the maxxum, and I wouldn’t go with anything else. I can’t stand the delayed steering of the power drive type motors, and I know too many people that are on there 3rd, 4th, or 5th pedal. The pedal on my motor guide is adjustable so it doesn’t suffer from the normal cable steer issue of the motor turning right as soon as you take your foot off the pedal. I would love to have an auto pilot feature, but not enough to offset my desire to have instant control on steering. You get used to running with a foot on the pedal, and I don’t find it inconvenient at all. It is second nature after a while and you don’t need to think about it, your foot just steers.

Great reading I am intrested in replacing my 65lb power drive with the 80lb terrova. Will the universal sonar work with my Vexilar sonar in the bow??

Yes, you will need the MKR-US2-7 cable to connect the vexilar to the trolling motor’s transducer.

Also guys, if you’re looking at the Terrova or Powerdrive, we will have a $100 mail-in rebate for the Terrova and a $50 rebate on the Powerdrive, available beginning February 1st!

For you guys who like cable drive motors for the faster steering response time, Minn Kota has a new motor in the lineup called the Fortrex.

Do you guys usually go with enough power to handle all conditions? for example, I mostly fish the river, and in the spring or other high flow times im usually underpowered….and sometimes have to start the main motor to get around with confidence. It would be nice to have enough power with the trolling motor to move around in high flow conditions…but maybe thats asking too much…plus when i tell people im want a 70# trolling motor for a 15′ boat they look at me like im crazy.

A 24 volt system on a low setting will run a long time!!!!!! Nice to have the power if you need it.

For a river boat 70# on a 15′ boat would be good. I run a 17’er and have a 80# Maxxuum. There is no such thing as too much motor when it comes to river currents. You can always run the motor at a lower setting and the batteries will last a LONG time!

I run a 1750 Crestliner Fish hawk and have the 101 lb. thrust terrova on. Over powered yep…but in the river it is nice to be able to get out of a situation fast. with that being said be careful with it wide open! Tipped me over backwards last year not knowing it was wide open when i hit the constant button. Never to much power though!
