I need a new lantern, I am thinking about the Coleman dual fuel powerhouse. What do some of you guys use and does anybody like the powerhouse??

    I like propane lanterns better.
No spilling fuel when re filling.
    No pumping or priming.

    Just light and go.

I’ve been using a single-mantle coleman unit that screws onto 1 lb. propane tanks. Very compact/lightweight unit – and durable. It gets banged around in my portable a lot and I’ve never had to replace the mantle. Throws a great deal of light – is adjustable, easy to ignite – perfect unit for icefishing in my humble estimation.

    And they’re cheap.

I used to have the dual fuel, for me it was very messy, smelly, so I switched to the 1 pound tank unit and have had very good results. My lantern has the 2 mantle system, and I added a finger type igniter to it and it works well.

I have a duel fuel Powerhouse and really like it. Lots of light and gives off enough heat to keep my tent warn unless it is really cold, then I start a Mr. Heater Jr.

I also use a dual mantle on a 1 lb. propane tank. Very durable, I have used the same set of mantles for over a year now, and they have seen some pretty good use.

The propane is clean and easily replaced if you run out. No pouring and pumping and I only have to carry one type of back up for my lantern and mr. heater.

I have always used the Coleman fuel lanterns and found them to be a pain filling. I would go with the 1# propane style – less mess and the tanks work with my other heaters. I would hate to smell those things burning on gas from the fumes they put out on white gas.

    Good luck

I also thought the gas fumes would be bad but as long as you run them close to high, they burn pretty clean. Can’t remember where I bought the funnel to fill mine but it is one that will let you know when it is full so you don’t over fill and spill the gas. If I was going to use the 1 lb. cylinders, I would check into getting the hose connector so you can fill them off a 20 lbs tank. Anyone use one of these and how do they work? I have heard mixed reviews.

I asked a question about refilling the pounders a month or two ago. Sounded like the verdict from most guys was that it wasn’t worth it. They were only getting them 1/2 to 3/4 full, and you could only refill them a couple times before they started to leak.

On another note, I have seen a buddy run a two way splitter from his 20# tank, one hose to the heater and the other hose to the lantern. I wasn’t a huge fan, but its another option.

I am still leaning toward the dual fuel power house. I have a Northstar 2500 propane now it has been nothing but trouble. It gave good light and heat when it ran okay. I can not even get the replacement parts I want from Coleman online. Propane has gotten too costly in those one pound cans. All I know is I want a new lantern by this weekend I hope I dont bite the bullet.

I’ve got a duel fuel lantern and it’s the best. i’m suprised how many people here like the propane tanks. I find them to be a pain and the duel fuel lantern eliminates all that hassle.

I agree with Cole, white gas only for me, lantern & cookstoves.

Propane for me. Coleman dual mantle, electric igniter, simple, hassle free, and reliable. The 1 lb bottles are nice for portability and I do use them, but something about using them 1 time and chucking them just really bothers me. I have mine rigged so I can run it off of a “christmas tree” that connects to a 20lb bottle, and that is a sweet setup.

I like waxy’s setup I’ve intended to do it that way so I can run my lantern off a 20# tank, plus most of those you can still hook up your heater to the same pole and run both your lantern and heater/whatever off the same tank. The you get all the benefits without any hassel, just a little more cost upfront. I like the Coleman lantern’s with the ignigtors.

    Edit to add link….

can’t say anthing about this particualr model, reviews look good, but this is what we’re talking about….
