I have a Clearwater Classic unit that I bought way back when. It is a great unit and does what it supposed to do. better then my friends unit which is a FL 12. However, the only problem with my unit is that the Clearwater Classic has a stiff cable for the transducer. I have converted my unit with taking out the arm cable and installing a Vexilar foam unit. My question is this. Can I buy a universal transducer unit to replace my original unit. You ice fisherman know what I am talking about as the stiff cable unit does not sometimes go straight down.

I don’t think you’ll find a universal ducer. My suggestion would be to take the cable inside where it’s warm and let the ducer hang free for several hours. That might help to straighten it.
One other thing to try, (and I’ve had to do this to several ducers from both vexilar and marcum that don’t hang straight from the factory), you can take a lead weight from a marker bouy and wrap it around the ducer and glue it. Just make sure theweight goes all the way around it. No more and no less. That added weight should make the ducer hang straight.

I have heard that there is a place called Fishlectronics that can modify a Vexilar transducer to work with the Zercom units.

I’d say give them a call.

I have a buddy who did that – went to fishelectronics and had them splice his Zercom plug onto a Vexilar ducer. Works great and wasn’t very expensive at all.

Those Zercoms are pretty neat units. Good target separation and almost indefinite battery life. Good luck to you.
