Strikemaster auger Question

Ok… Just bought a new 2HP strikemaster auger….decal on the auger and the manual say to run 24:1 gas to oil mix. The strikemaster oil for mixing a gallon of gas is 40:1.
Myself I think 24:1 is a bit strong…but I know someone here has likely called strikemaster about this…..What do you guys do?

I believe that is for the breakin period , so long as new I followed the intructions with mine ,then mixed as pleased

I would run one bottle (~5 oz.) of the smokeless Strikemaster oil
to one gallon of gas for the first couple of gallons.

Then back it off to 1/2 bottle of oil to one gallon of
    gas after that.

I guess it doesn’t say anything about that being for a break-in period at all. The decal and the manual imply that mixture should always be used..
My own thougt was maybe 24:1 for the first couple of tanks then 40:1 there after….but if something goes wrong will strikemaster warranty it if I wasn’t using their reccomended mix ratio?

And yes it is new never been started

I ran the strikemaster oil in mine for two years and had lots of oil spitting out the muffler.

I then switched to Amzoil 100/1 Sabre oil. That stuff is amazing, no more oil spitting and it starts better also.

I would not hesitate at all in running Amzoil Sabre oil in your new auger. And NO, it will not void your warranty.

if you are that worried about them standing behind the product then they arent that great i think thats alot of oil and would not use that much personaly but again if your that worried about it then you should do what they say the 40:1 is just what that bottle makes per gallon

Q: WHAT IS THE FUEL/OIL MIX RATIO FOR A 2-CYCLE ENGINE?

    # A: Per Tecumseh Products engine specifications, the Fuel/oil ratio

should be 40:1 (3 oz oil to one gallon gas) using a standard two cycle

engine oil. We also recommend using a no-smoke 2 cycle oil. (Sold in our

On-Ice Store) DO NOT USE METHANOL. Make sure to use winter formulated

(usually available November – April depending upon manufacturers) premium

unleaded gasoline-91 Octane (DO NOT USE WHITE GAS) for best engine

performance. DO NOT USE A MULTI-VISCOSITY OIL. Recommended brands of oil:

StrikeMaster’s No-Smoke, Two-Stroke Oil or any brand name, air-cooled, two

cycle engine oil such as Tecumseh, Homelite, Steele, etc. (mix oil to

Tecumseh’s specifications, not the oil manufacturer’s.

Since your seeing two difference mixture ratios, I would give StrikeMaster a call directly on Monday. Phone: 763.263.8999

Here’s how to fix the excessive oil out the the exhaust.

PS I’m a Klotz type a guy….love the smell of the stuff..just as good a amsoil and a bit less expensive.

Q: WHAT IS THE BLACK STUFF RUNNING OUT OF THE MUFFLER ON MY 2HP AUGER?

A: 2-cycle engined require mixing 2-cycle oil with unleaded fuel (in the fuel can before filing the tank on the auger). Some of the oil does not always burn off entirely and will secrete out the muffler. If you are noticing that there is excessive oil secretions from your muffler or that the spark plug is getting “gummed up”, the fuel /oil mixture is most likely mixed too rich (too much oil). Add 1-2 oz. of unleaded gas to lean out mixture (do not add directly to your auger’s fuel tank). Make sure to use winter formulated unleaded gasoline for best engine performance.

I have had a strikemaster auger for over 15 years. Ran it just like the mixture recommends for most of it. Changed over to the Amzoil Sabre as previously mentioned at 80:1 and would not switch back. Auger runs better than ever and I also run my weed wacker and Toro snowblower off the same gas. So no wasted gas at the end of icefishing season because I use this mixture year round in all my 2-cycle stuff. Burns soooo much cleaner and much easier starts. IMHO

Thanks Brian….I plan to call them on Monday to ask about the conflicting information….

So there is a lot of conflicting info…..The owners manual online from Strikemaster says 40:1…the FAQ from stikemaster says 40:1 and then the auger itself says 24:1 as well as the manual that came with my auger….

What the Heck?????? IMO 40:1 sounds right..but I was hoping that someone here had the same question in the past and called strikemaster about it…..Not sure what to do for tomorrow….But I know I am going to call on Monday to ask about it…

In the last year or 2 Strikemaster has changed their ratio from 24-1 to 40-1.You will be fine at 40-1.I think they leaned it out a little due to the large clouds of smoke the 24-1 use to produce.I run synthetic at 80-1 but it doesnt hurt to break in the auger with regular oil at 40-1.

it is a mag 2000……I think it might be last years model though. I bought it from my local small town dealer and it may have been there for a while. It does have the newer red dial kill switch on the throttle intstead the toggle switch on the motor…..

I have talked with a Strikemaster rep on this topic before.
    Here is what he said.
Run it 40:1, 24:1 is way to rich and will not run right. Tecumseh has recomended the switch from 24:1 to 40:1 in the last couple of years with the improvements in oil and after lots of testing. If you got a power head from even a year ago it may have a sticker on the power head that says 24:1.
Run 40:1 and you will be a happy camper. Same goes for Jiffy augers. Tecumseh will stand behind the motor no problem at a 40:1 mix.
(Tecumseh will actualy say you can go to a 50:1 mix with a high quality oil, but the rep told me not to tell you that, SSSSSHHHHH!)

    it’s 2 years old
    anything after 07 is 40:1
the motor is the same so 40:1 will not hurt it

BK, which Klotz oil are you using for the auger? I use their snowmobile stuff in all of my small engines, but haven’t switched the auger over yet.

I should clarify, this year I have the Strike Lite 4 stroker. I’m using the crank case oil that came with the auger.

In the past I’ve use the Outboard oil for the FD’s sled, weed wacker, chain saw and my augers.

I check with Klotzlubeman and they are interchangeable…the snowmobile/outboard oil.

Love that smell! (must be something from the ’70s, )

Thanks BK! I will have to make the switch! I have used it with no issues in the blender so far.

Just be careful with the “interchangability”. The only real difference between the outboard oil and snowmobile oil is that the snowmobile oil is made to have a pour point to -40 degrees so that in oil injection systems it will flow. The outboard oil will not flow well in the colder conditions.

Obviously, that is not a factor in premix applications.

Also, I would not be afraid to use 40:1 mixture or even to 50:1 mix. I run all my stuff at 50:1. It makes for easy starting, minimal “secretion” out your muffler…(sounds like a personal problem) and no plug fouling. We are not talking 10,000 rpm with an ice auger.

    Stay warm!

Where do you guys buy your Amsoil sabre oil?? I stopped into 3 auto parts shops (in CO) and they hadn’t even heard of the brand!!! Couldn’t believe 3 guys at 3 auto parts stores hadn’t even heard of Amsoil, and 2 didn’t even know where in the store they kept 2 cycle oil…..
I found some places to order online, but I’d like to get out and try it this weekend

    Thanks,

i have a 2 hp strikemaster thats around ten years old and i run that at 25:1 and have always been surprised at how clean it runs for such a rich mix. it smokes a little in the morning until it gets warmed up.

while were talking about 2 stroke mix, anybody experiment with running an outboard leaner than 50:1? i hate when im back trolling into a breeze and eat those fumes
