Auger question

Well, it looks like it may be time to replace the old Mag III. I thing I have narrowed down my choices to either a Lazer 2 stroke or the 4 stroke Srikelite.

My question is for the guys on here that have used the 4 stroke. Plain and simple, how has it worked for you? Is it worth the extra money? Would you buy another 4 stroke?

I am not real worried about speed, either of them will be a giant step up from what I have now. I am also not real worried about weight. My main concern is about dependability.
I would especially like to hear from people who put their augers in position where they might get knocked around a bit, say on a sled or wheeler.

    Thanks for the input guys..

I honestly can’t comment on dependability… yet, as I just bought one of these sweet little buggers but the way they run and start has impressed me so far. I’m about 8 hours from leaving for South Dakota where it will get a good work out and some knocking around and I can reply back after that.

I know Luke has had one for a couple seasons now so he might be able to offer some insight if he gets his nose in front of the pc before we head out.

Lenny- simply stated, I have no need to ever own a two stoke auger again- you said weight and speed are not a concern. What about fuel economy? You will be able to drill many more holes per tank with the four stroke- it is quiet, no mixing gas, and no smelling like exhaust- my auger has been extremely dependable. The only reason to not buy the stike lite might be if you are constantly dtilling in 30+ inches of ice-

I can’t recall anyone saying anything bad about the 4 stroker yet, Seen a few posts last year with people having problems with their Lazer mag, I kind of wondered if that was a user problem… Until my buddy got a bad one, he had issues keeping it running, and it would catch when you broke through the ice, Mine is a year or two older and it’s a different animal, wicked fast, starts easy, idels perfect, never a problem. Needless to say we used mine the rest of the day, Strikemaster did take care of him, he also opted to drive to Big Lake and deal with them in person.

I’d also shy away from the 3hp models, seen a few with carb issues/running in the past, no idea if they got them worked out.

Thanks for the reply Luke. Did you run yours all last season? No maintenance issues?

People keep going back to how a 2 stroke might be necessary if you are drilling deep ice. Does the 4 stroke lack in power? Why do you say the 2 stroke is better for deep ice?

Give me a call any time after dinner tonight. I’ll be on the road and it will be a great time to chat.

Actually we’re headed out after big perch. As in 14 – 15 inch jobbies!

Yep Lenny, I ran mine all last season. I think that was my third year with it- I have had the lite since it was introduced- and I have had zero issues with it- nope, it doesn’t lack power in deeper ice, it just doesn’t cut as fast as the 224- and speed is very important to me.

I was always a dedicated Strikemaster guy till my brother turned me onto the Nils. I tried it out today and what a machine. I cant comment on the Strike lite although it was my other choice for a new auger and would have been top choice had there not been a Nils hanging at the baitshop when I walked in to buy. 22 or 24 pounds and steel 48″ auger bit.

I’ve used both augers and I’m the guy who beats the daylights out of equipment. I exclusively drill with a 7 inch Lazer Mag express. That auger has traveled hundreds of miles across LOTW in a sled taking a pounding, hundreds of miles across Mille Lacs, and in every condition imaginable. I’d had 2 issues. I’ve broken the throttle wire and iced up the on/off switch. I was 30 miles out in LOTW and the throttle wire broke. That wire is designed so that if it does break, you can flip it around. Thank God for that!!
Every hole you’ve seen drilled in my reports over the years and years to come has and will be drilled with a Lazer Mag express.
