Does anyone know if the MrHeater/cookers get hot enough to fry fish in a 2 1/2 qt. cast iron fryer. I’ve just spent about an hour and a half looking at the heater/cooker, just the sunflower heater and the smaller buddy. Whatever I get will be used in a 2 man portable, 1 man portable and maybe in the boat. Any problem with possibly gasoline fumes in the bottom of the boat? I saw a guy once on p4 with a little charcoal grill in his boat, I just wondered “what if”

I just bought a Big Buddy heater from Northern Tool(Rochester) for $99 on sale(new). I just lit it last night and it kicks out the heat. My dumb question is..does that pilot light always stay lit while in use? Also does it make your eyes and head ache in he shack like sunflowers? I would like to use it in the house in an emergency, any thoughts? Thanks

I would think so I know I have cooked cans of soup on mine and it gets it hot in a HURRY
December 24, 2008 at 6:54 pm #731449I would think it’s more than enough heat to do so, heck my burners on my stove at home are only 8,000 btu, the only issues I’d worry about is the weight of the pan and oil, haven’t used a cooker, but I would think it could handle the weight.
December 24, 2008 at 8:22 pm #731495I’ll second the Mr. Heater MH12C. That’s all I’ve ever used up here, previously in an Otter and now in a Quickfish 3. Monday it was -15 and within 20 minutes the setting was on low and I sat in a sweater for 4 hours. And with the burner level you can heat a coffee pot or frying pan.
Walleye action kept us warm too. In 3 hours 3 of us released a 24, 26, 29 plus a dozen too small, kept 8 and missed 2 dozen.
December 24, 2008 at 11:33 pm #731537If it’s good enough in the Falls, it should work 7-8 hours south of there. Thanks. As far as frying the fish with the cast iron fryer, I normally drag out saw horses, a chunk of plywood and my coleman camp stove. If it’s got the heat, I’ll figure something out. I’m not planning on frying the fish on the ice anyway.

Even though the Buddy heaters do have a low oxygen shut off, I would not use them in a house except in a last resort immediate danger of freezing case. I would just be too afraid of carbon monoxide poisoning. I absolutely would not use one in any enclosure while I was sleeping.
December 25, 2008 at 1:38 pm #731613The pilot always stays lit. Like Lenny says, unless your gonna freeze to death, I wouldn’t trust a $99 heater with my or my familys life for sleeping with it going. For that, get an oil heater, they work great and no fumes, only draw back is if the power is out too…

December 26, 2008 at 4:41 pm #731811I’ve got a great idea for those who want to do a small fish fry on their mr heater cooker. Get a metal coffee (or something simular) can, the big one! wash and rinse real well, you can punch 2 small holes near the top and fashion a handle like a paint can. Fill half way with Crisco shortening, or lard if you want, and use the plastic cover. When prepping your fish, take off the lid and put on the sunflower to get up to temp. When finished, put the can in a snow bank to cool and the oil will harden back to shortening,(put lid on) keeping it from spilling all over the bottom of your sled. you can use the shortening a couple of times. I even keep a coffee can on the boat for a quick shore lunch. You can coat your fish as you like, but the night before I usually put some dry battter is a zipper bag, add the seasonings I want, then when I need to get to cook’n add some beer and knead the bag. Bring some buns, couple slices of cheese, some home-made tartar sauce in a reused mayo squeeze bottle, and you will be enjoying some awesome fish sandwiches.
