My trim button on my throttle will not trim up ,but will trim the motor down . The switch by the motor and up front works fine. The type of throttle is a QUICKSILVER. Is this an easy fix or should I leave this one to the pro’s.What would a new one cost? thanks

Not sure where you’re located. If you are in the Twin Cities area, I would check with Great American Marine in Bloomington.

Call twin city outboards, thay have alot of parts old and new for older outfits. I’ve got an old 4 cylinder 40 horse merc that runs like a jewel and i get my parts from them or Skipperliner marine in La crosse. I’ve got an old 1939 opposed cylinder evenrude with origional starter rope, 3 horse and twin cities outboard has all the parts for it. Some parts are pricey but they might have them.

Tom, one more thing, if you do the work yourself theres a small bb in the throttle control that drops out when you disassemble your control box. If you don’t know about this bb it will be hard to put it back in. Its an easy fix to put in a new switch but be carefull and look for that bb and install it back the same way it came apart. This bb is a stop for your fast idle throttle cable to keep it seperate from the throttle linkage. You might want to lube your throttle and shifting control cables at the same time. Heres an easy way to lube those cables. Take a 50 50 mix of gasoline and 20 weight oil and put it in a bottle. Hold the cable end in the bottle and wrap a rag around it to keep the mix coming out the cable not over the bottle. Turn them up side down and let it drain through the cable removing the old oil and dirt replacing it with new oil. Keeps those cables from binding up and getting stiff.

I had the same problem myself once. The culprit was the relay on the engine. There is a separate relay for up and down. On my engine they are located on the top left side beside the flywheel. You can follow the wiring from the trim switch on the engine right to the relays. If you switch them around and the engine will trim up and not down you have found the problem. It is a very simple fix. Just unplug it and buy a new one and plug it in. Don’t forget to coat the contacts with di-electric grease when installing the new one. Hope this helps.

just last week, My Yam 115 started to do just the opposite, the switch trims the motor up but not down, and the motor switch works both ways, thanks for the good answers before I asked. thanks Jack.
