WHAT IS A GOOD DIGTAL CAMERA TO GET WITHOUT SPENDING A FORTUNE AND STANDUP TO THE RIGORS OF THE BOAT AND SOME WATER AND WEATHER? I THINK A POST WAS PUT UP SOMETIME BACK ABOUT THESE CAMERAS.

It all really depends on what you consider a fortune. I had pretty much the same criteria as you, durable, water resistant, etc. This is what I ended up with.

Olympus Stylus 300. It is what they consider all weather. It holds up just fine with rain, spray or mist. It is a steel body, so it is pretty durable. It is not cheap. With a 128MB card it cost something like $500. It may be less now.

I have a mid priced Sony, $249. Well after you finish buying all the toys I spent close to $500. They told me flat out, if you don’t buy the service plan and it gets moisture in it it’s not covered under warranty. I didn’t buy the plan but I’m quit careful to not get it wet also. I keep all the stuff I need to keep dry (wallet, keys, Camera, Scale) in a nice Tupperware container. That way, God forbid My boat were to swamp or worse, capsize it would float up somewhere.

From what I’m hearing, everyone loves the camera they own! They are all pretty good. If I was going out today to buy one, it would be off of a website like amazon.com A quick search on that site I found one for $129 that would do the job.

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000ACXZU/qid=1066928670/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_8/103-6489961-3111025?v=glance&s=photo

I have seen digital cams as low as $49 on some sites. These are generally reconditioned units with a warranty.

You will pay upwards of an extra $300 for a waterproof unit. Not worth it in my book. I simply don’t pull the camera out in a rainstorm. Some purchase nice camera bags, I use a old sock and stuff the camera into a tupperware dish with a lid! Waterproof and shock resistant. Plus, it looks like lunch sitting in my truck or boat and no one has stolen my lunch!

The Stylus 300 is exactly the camera I was thinking of as well. Depending on what a guy wants to spend. If I can do a little self-promotion here, we happen to have a great deal going on the Stylus 300 right now. We have the whole package at $329.99.

You can see it here: Stylus 300

If you look to the bottom of our page, you’ll see that these cameras even have the optional underwater housing (if you plan to get REALLY wet ).

You might take a look at the Casio and Panasonic too if you are lloking for a lower priced camera. Here’s the link:

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

Yep Jon, New addition to our electronics line. I figured that there are now as many outdoorsmen shooting pics as guns these days so why not add some digital cameras to the store…

I supposed I should probably announce it on here. We also added a new line of binoculars and we’ll continue to add to our line of optics and cameras in the near future.

By the way, that Panasonic looks to be a nice camera too. There’s a million digital cameras out there. All depends on what you want and how much you want to spend.

    Take care all,

    Wade

Any of the new Olympus (water RESISTANT) cameras are great….

If you get it at BB, get the plan if it still covers batteries… we get the money back in batteries and when we have a whoopsie… but be sure that its not crushed whereas that deal does not cover abuse…

Once they told me to go home till it dried out, that “soaking wet in more than humidity”… lol

Riggy, There are a few different models out there. I had considered adding the Magpix line but then I heard they were not so great. Then I saw the price. One model is about $75 and another was around $100 or so. My thinking is, you get what you pay for so the Magpix probably do not get the job done. Here’s one negative review.
If anyone knows of a decent model, let us know please.

The resolution is 640 x 480, internet viewing is optimal at that resolution, but would not print even a 3×4 without seeing pixalization…

Also want to look at the zoom capabilities if its for wildlife…

The Olympus 700 series has 10X opt zoom, biggest you can get without spending thousands…. (its the camera I have).

i got my new one at Wal mart. It is a samsung 2.0 mega pixles and takes some pretty sharp pictures. I have already tested it out with my little boy. although i have taken some field pics with it and hope to post tommarow in the waterfowl section. I finally in my life took my first canadian goose. so I am going to post the pictures of me and the beast, see what you think of the picture.

oh yeah, the price was $129.00, and after i got the little memory card and some batteries, cam to around 160.00, although no warranty like besty buy.

Dont worry about a warranty on an affordable camera, also the extended plans cost a pretty penny… but for the upper end cameras, its a pretty good thing if you are outdoors alot… also digital cameras are about the only thing I would buy an extended plan for…
