Occasionally, when I least expect it my 1997 Johnson 150 will not start even though it has plenty of gas and turns over OK. The only thing I can think of is maybe the electronic ignition needs a certain voltage to fire properly. This happened the other day and the battery had enough power to spin it good but it wouldn’t start. The battery is new this spring. Finally I used my jumper cables to jump from my elect motor battery and it started right away even though it was flooded and smoked for a minute. I checked my terminal conections and they seemed OK – they were cleaned good when I put the new battery in. Has anyone had a similar experience and found a cure?

I will certainly be watching this post. I have had similar problems with my 1977 85 hp Johnson just in the last two weeks. I have not discovered a cause yet. It fired up and ran perfect to my first spot on Thursday. It would not start the rest of the evening. I could not get it started on Friday at all. Charged the battery overnight and it started fine on Saturday only to kill and never start again the rest of the day.

    Thanks for the post.

I used to have a 1995 Johnson 150 Fast Strike and had similar problems. Mine would usually act up after being warm, never had problems on the initial starting up. Turned out one of the stators in the motor went bad, replaced that and was good to go from there on out. Otherwise, theres also a small sensor eye sort of thing on the ignition system. If that’s all fogged up you might also end up with the same symptoms. Might also want to change the plugs out if they are old. Good luck!
