I am in the market for a new trolling motor, I currently have Pinpoint 60# that is on its way out. I see Minn Kota is coming out with a 74# Auto pilot, those of you running a 65# do you feel that it adequete or would you opt for 74# for the extra money? It is going on a Mr Pike 17.

    Thanks KLH

    KLH,
I have the 24V Minn Kota 65# AP/sonar on a 1850 FishHawk. I think it has plenty of power. The motor has run excellent. Good luck with your choice.

I Believe that you can never have too much power in your trolling motor. I fish the river a lot and it is nice to have that little extra ooomph when holding or trolling in the heavy spring current. My two cents.

I currently have the PowerDrive 65lb thrust on a 17.5 foot fiberglass boat. (Lot’s of weight with a 150HP main motor and kicker etc) No problem in heavy current or wind or both. I also had this same motor on a big Alumacraft Trophy 185, full windshield etc and no problem there either. I’d assume it’s enough for a 17 foot Lund. I would recommend the 60 inch shaft….never can have too much shaft length!

I will agree with Gator Hunter’s answer as well. Never have too much power. I run the Maxxum 101 model on my fiberglass boat. Some say it might be a little extreme, but nothing I cannot stand more than fishing wingdams in the wind and current and not have that little bit extra. In this case more is better in my opinion.
I will also ditto Jon J’s response with the long shaft lengths. having that length in the wind and waves gives you that much more control at the helm.

Glad to see the AP in a 74# model now. I was wondering how long until they have that availible.
Anyone know the price difference between the 65# and 74#?

I just looked through Cabela’s website and I did not find a 74# Autopilot. Where did you get your info KLH?

At the RCL, Minn Kota had a trailer their, comes out this fall sometime. I wonder what the price will be. And yes a 60″ shaft for sure. I have Pinpoint 60# 60″ now.
