A three bank charger is like three chargers in one unit. It will have three sets of leads to connect to each of your batteries. There is no need to unhook anything each of the batteries is charged independently. BTW Cabelas has a three bank charger on sale right now for $99.99 regularly 149.99 and you get triple points right now. Also if your total you get another $20 dollars off.

Wow that sounds like a Cabelas commercial. I just got an add in the mail today.

A 3-bank charger would be the best way to go since you have three batteries to keep charged. I’d suggest the Minn Kota MK-315 3-bank charger. It offers 15 total amps. Your starting battery will generally get topped off fairly quickly, and then all 15 amps will go toward your two trolling motor batteries. You’ll generally be able to get fully charged overnight, depending on your usage. I like the Minn Kota chargers because of the quality but I really like that they back them up with a 3 year warranty. They also have a $25 Rebate at this time, making this one a great buy as well.

Agree as well. You will also have a backup bank incase one fails.

I got the 3 bank charger from Jolly Ann and it has been great!!! For those lucky weekends where we get 2 or 3 days in a row of fishing in, we just plug in when we get home at night and by the next morning all the batteries are charged and ready to go! It has been one of the best additions to the boat. I sure don’t miss messing around with battery chargers after a long day on the water!

OK – very stupid question here…..

Does it harm a starting battery to be charged all the time like this? Since it is not a deep cell like a trolling battery? I am assuming not since you guys are recommending it

I am not 100 percent sure of the answer to your question but I would think the smaller the charge on the starting battery the better. Here is another option for you, I run a 2 bank on board charger for my two 24 volt trolling motor batties and a trickle charger for my starting battery.

No, it will not harm them. In fact, it will help them. The old myth about “memory” with batteries is not true, but that myth is still out there. It is best to keep your batteries charged. Another thing you can do is try to avoid extreme temps. That’s not always possible, but if you don’t use the battery in the winter, bring it inside.

I will second Wade’s and others comments on the MinnKota brand – nothing short of the best on the market. Last year at each event on the FLW tour – my batteries were charged in the morning and guys using other brands were not. This is on extension cords ran over 200′ so they realy do the job.

    Good luck with your choice!

Wade and Ted I would like your opinion on this, seeing as he already has a 2 bank Minnkota charger would you recommend going with a set up like I have here ? If his current 2 bank charger is working why replace it? The trickle charger would cost him less coin and will be very simple to install.

Great point Steve. It sounds like yours works just the same as the Minnkota (set it, forget it) and charging speed is not an issue for me as I rarely have the opportunity to fish back to back days as it is

This is all great info, as I am in the process of rethinking my battery situation

I would agree for this application. You are not concerned about the number of outlets/cords required and the reality is the charging battery is usually discharged the least after a day of fishing due to the engine alternator.

Good luck and remember to monitor the water level if you are using wet batteries!

That is another good point, that is why I do not use wet batteries as my trolling motor batteries are very difficult to get at in my boat. All the batteries in my boat are maintenance free just one more thing I do not need to worry about

The other thing that I like about having the separate charger for my starting battery is that my trolling motor batteries are on the opposite end of my boat as the starting battery so I did not have to figure out where to run all that extra wire to hook up all three batteries to a 3 bank charger.
