I was on the river last night and happened to get myself tangled in the motor. No big deal, stopped the motor, trimmed her up and stood with one foot on the motor and one in the splash well. The dang motor kept going down when I was standing on it. I would raise it back up, stand on it, and down it would go again. Well after getting my foot wet a couple of times I finally released my line. Is the fluid in the pump low?? I went through this same thing earlier in the week and didn’t have this problem. I don’t want to put the boat in the shop with the good action going on now. Any advice would be great. Its a 00 40 merc 4 stroke.

Sounds like a bad seal on the hydraulic ram.

Jami, Most likely low on fluid and have sprung a small leak. These units are pretty sealed up so to be low on fluid could mean a leak. This could be a matter of just a nut on one of the hydraulic fittings being loose. Best take it the dealer and have it looked at.

Loosen the nut and re-tighten it. Somehow my 60hp Merc. got air-locked once. After I did the above, it worked fine. Worth a shot before hauling in to the dealer.

Thanks guys, I’ll check all the fittings before the next venture out. I’d just hate to have to put it in the shop for a couple of weeks during this good fall bite.

Good luck. If you get time, please let us know if it worked out.

    Thanks,

Will do. I have to spend a little time this week doing home work. Seems I spent all weekend in the duck blind and the the croix, and not doing what I should have been.
