    What kind of range can one expect to get with a handheld VHF,is 5 watts the max power available in a handheld?

    Thanks for the question. The max I have heard on handhelds is 6 watts, but you will generally see 5 as the norm. Range on those handheld units is going to be around 5 miles. If you need greater range, you would need a fixed-mount model. Hope this helps.

    I have a 5-watt hand held that get’s 5 miles across water to a fixed mounted VHF with an 8 foot antenna, no problem. Have gone out as far as 6. (Measured by GPS from shore to boat)

    Handheld to handheld will be a little less.

    The handheld will recieve transmissions from as far away as 20-25 miles and are great to keep up with changing weather on the weather channels.

    If you decide on a HH, get a rechargable battery.
