I just bought a Minn Kota Maxxun 70# thrust and I would like to know what size batteries to buy. I read one post that said to use .85 to .95 amps per pound of thrust. Does this mean cranking amps? I am confused.

Choosing a trolling motor battery

How big of a battery x 2 for the 24v. system will fit in your battery compartment? Often manufacturer’s will pre-install the largest battery trays with tie-downs that will fit in a given compartment. Typically those trays will hold a 27, 29 or 31 series battery with the two smaller sizes being most common. Go out to your boat, measure the footprint of the battery tray and call Fleetfarm or run out to Walmart to see which batteries will fit.
Then buy the biggest darn size you can stuff in there. There will be small variations in the total AMP HOURS rated for each battery within each size group. Meaning most 27 series batteries will have nearly the same amp capacity as the other series 27 batteries. As you go up in size series (29 batteries are larger than series 27 batteries, etc.) the batteries will be rated for higher amp hour reserve capacity.
So… find the largest series that will fit and then shop to find the battery within that series rated for the highest amp hour reserve capacity.

I’ve had mine 4 years and when I recharge them every 2 monthes in the winter they are ready in 15 min at 1.5 amps on the battery tender. Last spring I ran them for 3 days without charging while crappie fishing in the trees in Missouri. They’re lighter weight, never need water, don’t get corrosion on the terminals, and can be mounted in any position and don’t have to be removed in the winter lay-up. What more can you ask for? I liked the trollers so much, I bought an Optima starter batt for my rig also. A#1

Check them outMarch 7, 2008 at 5:36 am #663058Go with the Glass Mat battery, you pay more but you will not be sorry. I have 2 Cabelas group 27 AGM’s for trolling and a Optima for starting. The batteries are great, no water, hold a charge forever and can take the beating of a boat. Good Luck!

I looked on Cabela’s website and the batteries aren’t on sale. The battery/charger combinations are on sale. I already have a onboard charger.

What are they running for a price? I live in IA but have a buddy who lives in Faribault who could pick me up a couple if the price is right.

March 8, 2008 at 12:37 am #663409Like James stated, get the biggest you can fit. I have found the best bang for the buck has been Trojan. About $85 for group 29’s. And make sure to add a circut breaker.
