Hey guys. The local Gander Mountain is closing and having a clearance sale. 20-30% off just Marine accecories and motors. I was thinking of getting this small Minnkota trolling motor. For like $85 after discount I can get a 30lb thrust one or a 36lb thrust one for about $105.

My question is, what will work better on my boat? I have a 15′ fiberglass Tuffy. Say 600-700 lbs. of people gear, gas and motor. The boat alone, I would guess is maybee 400 lb? Anyway would I be better off with the 36lb or will the 30lb move it along ok?

I have no ideo, so I thouhgt Id ask before I buy. Thanks guys!

I personally don’t think you can ever have too much trolling motor thrust, especially if you fish in current or the wind.

    Go big or go home!!

Go with the 36# forsure. It will be 20 bucks well spent.

Definitly the 36 lb. do you have any idea what the discount is on regular fishing stuff. Still 30 % ? I am heading there tonight. Thanks

36 lb of thrust isn’t very much thrust. In my opinion you are going too light. You may end up getting something you don’t like. On a windy day or in some current you are going to struggle with that little of thrust. Just my opinion – on my alumacraft the lightest I would run is 55# and even then I found that wanting.

Can’t say it any better than that right there. You can never have too much electric. That’s why the speed AND height are adjustable!

A 36# trolling motor is just about right for a 14′ aluminum bench boat on smaller lakes where wind is never a huge issue.

A boat any heavier… It will work for controlling drifts if the wind isnt too bad, or getting the boat into backwaters for crappies.. etc.

I wouldnt have real high expectations with that little motor on a heavy boat. It will push it, but it will struggle in wind.

Keep alert, that little motor can kill your battery in a couple hours easy if its being run full throttle to compensate for wind.

Get a 55 lb 12 volt model Minnkota. You can never have enough thrust in current or wind.
    Thanks, Bill
