I’ve been looking for a new GPS unit and did some digging on prices on the Garmin GPS 162 which is a unit I very much wanted after using Dustins 168. The 162 is the same unit as the 168 minus the sonar which I don’t need. Here’s what I found on pricing for that unit between Cabelas and Jolly Ann…

    Cabelas

    GarminĀ® GPSMap 162 Item: ID-013850
    Price: $419.00
(not sure if this includes the internal antenna)

    Jolly Ann

Garmin GPSMAP 162 with internal antenna
    $328.00

Um, HOLY SMOKES. Big difference. Plus the free shipping. Check out Jolly Ann guys when you go shopping for you electronics. My new Garmin will be here in a couple days. I’ll let everyone know how I like the unit after I get to run it through the paces on Mille Lacs.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of an internal antenna compared to an external antenna on a gps unit? Anybody know for sure? Thanks.

Yeah I do.. Dustin’s external antenna cost extra, shorts out temporarily when the connections get wet and makes moving the unit from one location in the boat to another much more difficult. I mean, for the cost of an extra power cord that unit with the internal can be moved from the transom to the bow in a snap. With the external you’re limited by the physical limitation of the connection to the antenna. Those cords are only so long.

I’m sure there are other plus (and maybe some minuses I don’t know about) but those are the points that have me sold on the internal antennas. I’ve not heard of any reception issues with the internals either.

    Hope this helps.

If you had a tiller-style boat like the lund pro-v’s, you’d need the external antenna. This is because the unit sits in side the ‘cabinet’ deeper in the boat and could not get good reception, at least from the gunnel-side of the boat. Receiving signals from only one side, and worse yet, only tracking multipath signals from the other side will result in bad DOP.

Without going into it, poor DOP is a bad thing. An external antenna would give you better sky visibility – at least in that case.

Im going to buy a new flasher soon. Does he suggest any specific model for the kind of fishing i’ll be doing? The prices sound right. Be nice to buy from somewhere else than a chain store when it comes to servicing.

Thanks to all for the kind words and the welcome. Thanks to James, Dave, and the In-Depth Angling staff for working with me on this joint venture. I liked this site so much I thought I could help pay a few bills around here, thus the sponsorship.

James and the gang also thought it might be helpful to members to be kept informed on new products that hit the market, as well as factory rebates and other seasonal pricing changes on the products we all use. I will do my best as Moderator to keep members informed and up-to-date on marine electronics. If anyone has questions, please post them here, email me, or send a message.

As always, the strength of the outdoor gear forum and this site is the generous sharing of information by a community of skilled outdoorsmen. I don’t expect that to change. You guys are the experts. I’ll do what I can to help out.

Ryan, thank you for the vote of confidence buddy!

Again, thank you all. This is a great site!

Hey Wade, what do you suggest as far as internal antenna/external antenna advantages/disadvantages on gps systems? Is there a reception issue with the internal gps?
    Thanks wade.

Gator, most of my customers who buy an external antenna fish the Great Lakes or Coastal/Ocean waters. They have cabin cruisers or other types of boats with a cover that may interfere with the GPS signals. You should not need the external antenna. Also note Gianni’s post, explaining how the boat itself may interfere. But as long as you have a clear path to the unit, it should be just fine.

    Good question. Thanks, Wade

Wade, my concern would be when you mount a GPS w/internal antenna in a electronics compartment as in a tiller boat like mine? would it receive it’s signal?

Bobber, I would suggest an external antenna in that situation. You may get too much interference if it’s actually mounted IN the compartment. The GPS receiver needs to have a clear path to receive the signal. For example, folks who use a GPS in their vehicle often get an external antenna to reduce interference. Those who don’t tend to place the entire unit up in the windshield with an automotive mount.

In a tiller rig, you would either need the external antenna, or you would need to mount your GPS in a position that is free from interference. Those with a console can mount the GPS on the console and should not need the external antenna.

    Thanks for the question.

    Wade
Under the windshield on the console wouldn’t interfere with the signal would it? Thanks for the help.
