I need to buy an ice auger . The sporting goods store in RED WING thought I was nuts wanting to buy one in August while on vacation. What I need is a web site or a catalog name. The thickest ice we see down here is around eight inches. THANKS

Wherever you find your auger, make sure it’s a Lazer Ice Auger. Those things are fantastic for drilling holes. I bought one a few years ago and I will never go to a different product. Here is a link. At the bottom of the page is an online store.

I’ll second that! Especially if you plan to redrill existing holes. Quick starting, quick drilling and relativly light weight.

    Tom,

I’ve been running Strikemaster ice augers since the first year they made the Lazer blade. I’ve had several models of the power auger, from 8 – 10 inches. Loved them all and that little two horse motor is a worry free cutting machine.

As for hand augers, I’ve run the mora’s and the lazer’s. The lazer is hands down the best hand auger on the market, in my not so humble opinion.

I agree with waterfouler that the lazer hand auger is sweet! If I never had to deal with ice thicker than 8 inches, it would be the only auger I own.

Tom one other thing. If your going to target pan fish then you only need a 4-6″ auger. These small hand augers will really go through the ice. Also the Lazer brand is hard to beat.

Good point Ryan. I have a 6″ hand and a 8″ gas. I have yet to catch a fish through the ice that I needed a 10″ hole.

I bought a Eskimo 8″ gas auger three years ago and it has not let me down once. It really cuts the ice nice and runs great. I can punch over a hundred holes with a tank of gas. Name brands are fine, but performance is everything.

I also have an eskimo power auger, nice little unit! But if your only dealing with 8″, I’d go with a 6″ lazer definitely, not worth the extra work of dragging a power auger around for that little ice!

I have a 6″ Lazer hand auger as well. It hasn’t given me any problems, but the ice here in NE Iowa will stretch 2 feet at times, and that gets to be a lot of cranking.

As far as where to get one, I found mine at http://www.sportsmansguide.com website as an overstock and paid less than fifty bucks, including shipping if I remember right.
