Motorola 2-ways – neat tip

Frustrated by the little lyrical “chip” that your Motorola 2-ways give you after you release the mic? You can silence this by holding down the “+” button when you turn the unit on. To my knowledge, this works with all Motorolas. Odd that this info is nowhere to be found in the owner’s manual.

I use a pair of these while deerhunting – it’s nice to check in with the other guys at appointed times of the day. Hated the chirp noise and was about to buy a different pair when I was told of this by a buddy.

Not that I know much about it, and not trying to get anyone in trouble….but isn’t it illegal to have 2 ways in the field when hunting deer? Could be wrong, but I thought I heard that once……

I don’t believe the radios are illegal but I do know you can’t use them to aid in taking of deer. So I would think you could radio your buddies that you’re getting out of your stand and heading in for lunch or to have them around as a basic safety measure. I know you can’t use them to tell others where deer are located, etc. I believe that’s what got Babe Winkleman in a bit of a bind a few years back.

That was my obvious thought on why you wouldn’t be able to use them (Babe Winkelman) but I just assumed with the way laws are made, the state wouldn’t have given you enough rope to hang yourself. I.E. I have an open beer in my truck, but I’m not drinking it, I swear officer…..that sort of thing.

Not saying that everyone would use radios for poaching/unethical hunting, but it just seems like something that they would illegalize to stop the hassle on the DNR.

I hear ya. And I could see how this would present an enforcement nightmare.

There’s nothing illegal about having two-ways with you while hunting – as the previous posts caption – you just can’t use them to assist in the taking of game. They are a great safety tool.

Not that hard for the DNR to enforce either. They can scan the airwaves just as easily as you and I.

It’s illegal to shine deer, but you sure as heck can have a flashlight in your backpack. Having one doesn’t suggest that you’re up to no good.

We have radios with us when hunting as well. up where we hunt, the woods are thick and usually gets a little crowded. We have our own land… but it is almost impossible to tell if the shot that makes you jump is coming from your own party or someone near by. So, when shot is heard… you always hear a “hey, was that you?” on the radio. Not aiding in harvesting deer… just needing to know if it is time to climb down, put the gear and guns away… and have a congratulatory shot.

For WI you can use 2 ways for any reason except for getting someone to tag a deer.

Just for clarification it is only illegal if you have a weapon in possesion or are outside legal shooting hours/dates. Shining deer is a fun pastime my dad taught us. Unfortunately everyone thinks your poaching nowadays which sucks.

we use ours for that purpose as well. to find out who shot and if they need help finding/tracking the deer. we also had a very bad diabetic that hunted with us so if he started to have problems he could radio for help and we could get him out of the field asap and if needed into to town for insulin shots. so far, not needed the radios for serious health related problems.
