Yamaha Oil Filters – Mandatory?

Do I need to use an official Yamaha Oil Filter on my F90 or can I use another brand? Does anyone know if there is a big price difference? Is there anything warranty related as to using “official” Yamaha oil and filters? Is there anything special about the Yammylube or can I use any quality oil? Getting ‘er ready for winter.

    Thanks.

I have a Yamaha F150 and cannot find any other filter listed with any other oil filter companies. As far as oil any oil that meets manufactures specs. is OK I don’t use Yamalube in mine and have not had any problems or oil use at all.

I use NAPA gold filters, not the silver or any other. The gold filters have a relief return spring (as does any high end filter)that ensures you don’t bypass the filter if you get a pressure “spike”.

As to lubes look for NGLIC for grease and SAE rating for oils and gearlube,as long as they meet or exceed the recommendation your off to the races. For the two strokes refer to the TCW rating.

I’ve got NAPA Gold series on everything from lawn mowers to farm tractors, have you tried cross referencing ? No I don’t work for NAPA,the micron rating, bypass system and availability of their filters just works well for me.

Personally, I would run yamaha brand. Thats what I run. That is what the book recommends. I don’t know if running other brands would void the warranty or not.
Maybe Ted can chime in here.

I have been using the Mobil 1 filter in this list because it holds more and the micron rating is lower. Here is the list for alternatives for the F-150 Yamaha.
    Yamaha part number – 69J-13440-00
Denso part number – 115010-6000 (typed on filter)
Same as: Toyota – 90915-20003 (this is how I found all the cross references)

    Alternatives:

    Purolator PureOne: PL-10241
    Purolator Premium Plus: L-10241
    Hastings: LF-494
    Baldwin: B-1405
WIX (Clarkie, you were right) 51348
    K&N: HP1002
    Mobil-1: M1-102
    Sierra Marine: 18-7906

    Good Luck.

The book lists 5GH-13440-00-00 filter from Yamaha for my F90. It’s $12.99 at Cabelas. Fram has an equivalent PH6017 for $5.99 at Fleet Farm. Is the Yammy worth 7 bucks more? Thanks for the input so far.

Being an old guy with more time than money I searched the i-net for suppliers of the filters I needed for my Suzi. Most online places sell the part you are looking for much cheaper than the local guys. In my case, as much as a third of the dealer price when ordered in quantity (6). I bought my 6 filters and then use the oil that meets the manufacturers specs for that motor. If you’re doing you’re own service it’ll be a noticable savings- – – -jerr

If it was me I would pay a little extra and go with the Yamaha brand stuff…afterall, you only have to do it once, maybe twice, a year. The little bit of savings will be off-set by peace-of-mind knowing you for sure have used what works.

Fram is probably at the bottom of the quality scale. I’d advise against the Fram filter.

    I’d vote for Wix/Napa.

I’ll second that post, sometimes I have too much free time on my hands, I’ve spent several nights on the oil forums…. but anyways…

Fram is junk, and so is penzoil, I believe has fram make their filters .

In my view shopping PRICE on an oil filter to protect an engine worth thousands of dollars is using the wrong criteria.I want to know what a QUALITY filter is,and I’ll pay for it and smile.

sorry for the delay folks – went down for the Iowa game this weekend and then drove to Ranger and dropped off my boat yesterday.

My $.02 is spend the money and use the manufacturer’s filters and oil. If you were to have a warranty claim and have filter that’s not a Yamaha on your engine, this could be an issue.

Search the web for pricing if you don’t want to support your local dealer. As a poster said above, maybe buying in quantity will achieve the price points you are looking for. If you buy the cheapest filter, more than likely you are purchasing protection proportional to what you paid…

Let me know if I can be of further help.

If you don’t think there is a difference, cut a Yamaha, and an aftermarket filter open. You will see why the Yami filter costs a couple bucks more. There is a difference.

Is it ok to run an aftermarket filter? Should be, but to save a couple of bucks I would rather buy cheaper beer.

If 7 extra bucks on a filter once or twice a year is going to break you, you weren’t going to make it anyway…..

    Just a thought – Tim

I’ll stick the the better beer and the Yammy filter. I go with the Yammy Lube also. Piece of mind, and good beer.

    Thanks everyone.

I run Yamalube with Wix filters, stay away from fram, they are junk.
