I had a problem like that on my merc, do not know much about the Yammi’s but check your fuel fitting on the inside of your cowling. If yours is plastic like mine is you can crack the nozzle that your fuel line comes out of by trimming up to far and not having the jack plate up far enough. Not sure if this helps but it has happened to me (twice)

October 11, 2007 at 11:28 am #615536I had this problem on my last boat several times. After changing plugs, checking the motor out it still did it. The problem ended up being the starter key switch. It would not stay tight. Ended up putting several new key switches in before the problem ended. If yours isn’t loose then its probably [hopefully] what the others suggested you check because that would be cheaper and easier than key switches. Bad gas could also cause it. There has been ALOT of bad gas problems this year my dealer has told me.
Thanks, BillOctober 11, 2007 at 11:37 am #615541bad O2 sensor? take a look at Bass Boat Central in their Yamaha Forum. There is a ton of great information on that site for troubleshooting motor problems. If it is indeed the O2 sensor, it almost sounds like you can replace it with a General Motors part thats cheaper than the Yammi if I remember correctly. Good luck!
October 11, 2007 at 1:32 pm #615584do ya think it could be the check valve in the tank, just thinking thanks terry hansen
October 11, 2007 at 1:54 pm #615595I would start with the O2 sensor. It sounds like that is a fairly common problem with those motors. Hopefully Nick will chime in here soon for you to give you his 2 cents. He seems to know a thing or 2 about Yamahas

That’s wher I tend to get and learn a lot Bass boat central, doesn’t really sound like a O2 sensor really, more of a fuel issue, maybe a line that’s weak and getting sucked in, something cause a lack of fuel I would think. Not at home so I don’t have any access to my repair manuals… The people on BBC seem to pretty darn sharp, the seach function is kind of crappy but it does work somewhat, I’ve used goggle before to search BBC with better results half the time. I can look in teh repair manual later and see if it helps more.Actually I do a lot of reading, (too much computer time not enough fishing ) so I’m far from being an expert, but I tend to be good at finding an expert’s opinion.
October 11, 2007 at 4:01 pm #615633it just sounded to me like the motor was getting hot and then running crappy.
October 11, 2007 at 4:46 pm #615645If it were running hot, he should get an alarm. If the alarm happens not to be working, I believe on an HPDI a dealer with the proper cable can pull the records of the alarms.
October 11, 2007 at 6:38 pm #615671sorry, I didn’t mean it as getting hot enough to set off an alarm, just when the engine heats up to operating temperature…
October 17, 2007 at 5:22 pm #617267Find anything yet? Looking through the service manual It have it doesn’t really have a trouble shooting section.
October 18, 2007 at 4:49 pm #617745I have a 2001 200 hpdi and had a similar issue. Turned out to just be a bad ground connection on the battery…..actually a bad battery in the end. But as of now, the problem is fixed. The electrical systems of an HPDI are touchy, and if you have a voltage drop due to poor connection, bad battery, short etc. etc. you will have a motor cutting out. Not sure if your problem is electrical or not, I thought mine was fuel, but was electrical. Worth a look. Steve
October 18, 2007 at 9:23 pm #617849Thats a really good point I’ve heard the HPDI are extra touchy with their batteries, I believe the is a service bulletin out there suggesting bigger batteries than then most came with orginally.
BTW Did you see my thread (on here) linking you to some info on HPDI oil pumps? http://bbcboards.zeroforum.com/zerothread?id=209761
