Suzuki 150 vs 175 HP 4-strokes

Anybody running one of these two models on their current rig? I’m looking for reliability and performance information relating specifically to these two engines.

I am trying to decide between these two power choices for my next boat. The boat’s max HP is 175, and yes, I’m familiar with the wisdom regarding maxing out the hull’s HP.

I am currently running a 115 HP 4-stroke, made by Suzuki but with a Johnson label on it. I couldn’t be happier with the reliability of this motor, and I’m hoping its larger cousins are equally trouble-free.

Because of contractual issues, these are the only two motors I am considering, so comments about how the E-tec 175 rocks or the performance of a yammie 150 can’t be beat aren’t going to do me any good. Thanks!

I talked to a dealer about the 150 and 175. He said the 150 was closer to 155hp. The max on my boat is 175 and his opinion the 150 would be his choice over the 175 based on power vs. cost. Unfortunately my boat was already equipped with a different motor so his advice didn’t help me much.

We run the 140 HP and We have not had one problem with it yet. We were a little hesitant with buying it with the boat because we have never run them before. My cousin went to school for motors and specializing in boat motors. He said the motor is the same as the Johnson and Evinrude. Actually I believe that Suzuki makes the motors for those two companys. The motors are the same exact thing except for the color of the motor and the stickers are different. We have not had one problem with ours. I would reccomend it to anyone

This is in no way a slam to Suzuki, because I know they make a super reliable motor..But I remember guys on here complaining about the speed and power of the 140. I have not heard anything about a 150.

    Jason,
My Suzuki is a 1997 115 2- stroke they do not make them anymore. They are only making all 4 stroke stuff now.
My motor has been in the shop for repairs twice since I have owned it. The first was when it was brand new with a loose bolt. The second was four years ago when the problem was self induced I had wired a depthfinder to close to the motor wires and it was sending false messages to the motors computer. So in all reality the motor has only been down once, that is in ten years.

I too am looking at the new 175 Suzuki or the E-Tec 175 HO

I was talking to Nate at S-M Marine and he says that the new 175 is an awesome motor. I am still checking weights and speed tests and looking at reports. He says that it has a great hole shot something about a new cam assembly.

I have no problem putting another Suzuki on the back of my rig.
I am just not sure I want to leave the two stoke technology behind. Right now I just add oil to the reservoir and go I change the lower unit once a year. I go to the four stroke then I probably need to change oil in it a couple times a year. Sounds like work to me..plus the weigh 50 to 75 pounds more. This does not sound like much but you add your kicker motor to the rear and your tin ship now has the bow catching tons of wind. Just some things that I have been thinking about.

Good luck on your new purchase.
Go Big 175 all the way.

If you are looking at the boat I think you are, I would lean towards the 175 simply for perfomance reasons. That extra ummph is always nice in my opinion. However, how often do we really get to utilize that extra 25HP?? You will probably see about a 5-7mph difference in top end. This may or may not be a factor for you. I’m a man, I need more POWER!! LOL. Either way, looking forward to seeing the new rig. Love new boats!!!!

Thanks for the thread Jason. I am looking at either the 175 or the 200 Suzuki. $2500 difference on price for an few extra horses. I will be watching this thread closely.

Max it out. You wont reget it. Suzuki is one of the finest.

That’s my inclination. There is almost no weight difference, and the cost difference, spread out over the lifetime of the loan, isn’t very much at all.

175 it is. Thanks for all the comments everybody!

I will likely order within the next month or so. Pickup and subsequent viewing (not to mention fishing) will depend on a rapid sale of the ‘hawk. I’m hoping to be fishing out of the new rig during the January full moon period on P4.

So much interest about Jason’s new boat….

Well, let’s just say that if Dean and I are both fishing on the same day next spring, it will be hard to tell our boats apart without looking at the motors.
