Have been looking at a St.Croix Premier 7ft Medium (casting)as a new cranker. They seem to have alot of flex as compared to other mediums but I suppose that is the idea. Anyone have any experience with this rod or have other suggestions?

its all going to depend on what kind of cranks you will be throwing…If you are looking for a rod to throw shallow runners you should be fine, but if you are looking for a deep diving crank rod, I would strongly recommend a heavier rod than the croix..Either way, if you can afford it, get a loomis cranking rod…they are worth every penny

You can compare rod blanks at theRod Database. My buddy and I run the site, he takes most of the data. Anyway, he would normally suggest that whichever rod you choose that you go with one that has moderate to slow action. A lot of the rods in the database are in blank for so if you have any questions, I believe his email is in there.

I have used the St. Croix 7ft Medium Avid for large crankbaits (i.e. Rapala DT-16s) and it has worked well for me. I currently use St. Croix’s Tournament 7′ 10″ cranking stick and love it.

What length rods do you guys like to pitch with and why? Everyone I talk to seem to have a different answer to this question.

    Mike,

I’ve been prefering the shorter (6′ to 6’6″) length graphite rods with a lot of flex in them (I think that is “moderate” action).

I look for the ability to feel bottom and enough give to flex when the fish hits the crank.

The rods tend to be at the lower end of the price spectrum. They also work well for my kids and I don’t have to worry about them “tweaking” my more expensive pitching/jigging sticks.

I use mostly light crankbaits like #5 shad raps, model A’s, quarter ounce stuff with the occasional DT10 and rattle trap thrown in if that gives you any idea.

Tom, thanks but I have gotten partial to 7 foot rods. Seems like they wear you down a little less over the course of the day?

Hey bigdog, if you’re ever up in the area of Everts Resort, Dean will let you try some rods, that way you get to buy what you like.

I’m becoming really partial to the St. Croix Tournament Legend Elite rods. I have been pitching cranks and blades with the 6’6 medium fast action tips and love them.

I have lately became partial to Shimano Crucial rods. I have their crankbait rod 7′ medium power medium fast action and absolutely love this rod. It feels great in the hand. Allows me to feel the bottom if I wish to do so with its sensitivity. It has just the right amount of flex and give in it for me also. It is also a lite rod so it doesn’t wear you down as much. Plus you can’t beat the over the counter lifetime warranty. I would highly suggest taking a look at it.
