poor depth readings, Lowrance

have a new lowrance x-17 with GPS that has trouble getting a depth reading, usually with speeds over 10mph on 2004 lund proV. Sometimes wont read even sitting still. The depth reading just starts flashing and comes back in a few seconds if I wait or sometimes I have to slow down/stop. Hard to drive in Canadian water with unseen rocks everywhere! Lowrance claims “poor install” with transon mount. Have mounted it everywhere possible (even took to a professional installer to check). I have ran a system reset too. Interestly enough, I my 1988 ranger with lowrance 245 with GPS had the exact same poor depth reading performance. Anyone else experience this? thanks…………..tom

I have also had problems simular to that and it ended up being a transducer problem. You might want to borrow one from someone and try it, otherwise you may just have to bite the bullet and buy one but that can get expensive it this is not the problem… Good Luck

    Check your own transducer first.
If the the wire is tight or has any sharp bends in it, it can disrupt the signal. Same problems were happening om my lcx-25- loose depth, even at rest, but the temp would still read ok. I had followed the manual’s instructions and wound the transducer cable through the mounting bracket, and after a few trips started having the problems.
It could still be a bad transducer, but check first.

Can you post some pics of your install?

thanks for the inputs. I already have two transducers mounted just to try to get one to work. I took the boat into a repair shop in Nisswa, Mn that only works on Lowrance products last week to have the transon install & unit checked. Everything looked fine. (He preformed a reset, which didn’t help)
Looking for info on this site and others, sounds like Lowrance has had all sorts of issues with their lastest units when you perform any updates (which we did per their instructions) I will install a HumingBird for a reliable reading till Lowrance can solve the issue. thanks for the help…………..tom

I called Lowrance friday and they are having a lot of trouble with all of their LCX series units if you perform an update for a HotMaps glich(which I did) They are working hard to repair the glich. For now my old humingbird will do!…thanks…..tom
