Humminbird side scan

NSD’s shorting the sides down makes me think you can see a lot more detail that way. Personally, what I’m going to do is run at about 100 foot each side till I find a point of interest. I’ll waypoint it, then shorten the sides down to 30 to 50 foot, then may be even go to just one side.
Keep in mind there are going to be a lot of things that are going to make difference’s in how you see stuff.
Your forward speed will change its scale in your line of travel. Side scan widths will change its widths and ping rate will change it again in the line of travel.
A lot of things to keep in mind during a recovery if conditions aren’t good.
Here’s a picture of my tub with out the MAV unit or the sonar. She ain’t pretty but I think it’ll work as good as any thing out there for this. I just need to think about a trolling motor now.

Whats the point of these units if they dont mark fish?
Are they more of a “toy” for underwater scanning? I have read alot about them but dont see much info on how they mark fish.

Derek, I’d say NSD’s pics above showed some fantastic fish shots. For me, knowing where the structure is to fish the fish is some times more important. Otherwise why would you need a map.

I have the 797csi if I want a closer look at peice of structure I can run my cursor over it and enlarge it for a better look. If I had the bucks I would buy the 979csi for the bigger screen much easier to read.

It doea take some getting used to reading the images ( still learning ) because your vewing it as if you were in a plane and flying over the top of it looking straight down on it not from the side.

I`t sure wouldn`t be the first peice of equipment I would let go from my boat.

I wanted to test out a couple things today since I had a known target. There are some strange things down there. I’ve got the feeling there are more than a few anchor ropes is all I can guess after seeing these long thin lines running a cross the bottom in areas I know people bobber fish. But I can’t come up with a good reason for some of the big divots that show up.
Any way, I ran back out to that boat to test some different settings on the 997 like shorter sides, the 800 khz scan against the 455. The 800 has a lot of attenuation so unless your on a very hard bottom it’s kind of marginal. But when you got some thing, it can give a pretty good picture.
I found the boat again and put a buoy next to it then ran over trying different things. This picture was a conglomeration of about ever thing, 800 khz, one side at 50 ft.

Here’s what it looked like on just the regular sonar.

    Warren,
Good stuff. Save the location because I want to drive over it with my Lowrance and capture it with my Aqua-Vu. I may want to use it on my next sonar DVD and for my Lowrance Schools this winter.

I’d like to see what a scan of a wingdam on the Mississippi looks like on these units.

Could this be an old snow mobile. I drew an out line to compare.

Last post. I did a contour map using just the Humminbird for coordinates and depth on the laptop with DrDepth In the past we’ve experienced some surpentine in the contour lines with other sonars, depending on how fast you went. I was doing around 5 to 6 mph which always caused enough it was quite noticeable in the past but as far as I’m concerned there wasn’t any in this map.

    That is pretty neat.

I was wondering? Do you fish or play with the boat gadgets

That is very interesting, is that the boat in one of the above posts?

Any more the only fishing I do is if I fish with Doc. With dad passing away last fall from Alzheimer’s this is the first summer in a long time that I can get away with out a lot of planning, even for just a day.
The gadgets are additions for my mapping although I have to admit I’ve been distracted playing with them. These side scans are kind of like when metal detectors first came out and every thing hadn’t been picked through yet.
I was really surprised at all the fish darting out of view around this thing. I was laughing at one bass that stood its ground. Just wish the picture came out better.

    Warren,

I saw this in lake #2, N 45 16.292, W 92 57.123. I didn’t have time to check it out but it looked to me like it went across the entire lake. Phone line???

And here’s an interesting one I forgot about from another lake, VW Bug???

The last one, if your thinking a body, unless I was looking for one the scale makes me think coincidence. I would be looking for more shadow zone behind it. The VW is interesting but I would have expected it to reflect the sonar so big time that it would have been almost over exposed unless it had tons of crude on it.
That one line was likely the sewer line going across the lake.

Yes but it was a joke, as was the VW suggestion. But the “VW” scan is interesting…I’ll have to check it out again…

Chisago and Washington county water patrols expressed an intereste in meeting with me some time this week but in between if there is a no wind day I’m going to be making another run out on the lake with the AquaVue. The concrete float handles worked but aren’t that handy so I picked up a telescoping painting handle that stretches out to 20 foot. I’m going to mount the camera on 1.5′ wood screw add on section so the camera can be rigged ahead of time, then only needs to have the telescoping pole attached. Before then I’m going to wrap the top of the handle in a heavy bag then put it in a small laundry detergent bottle and fill it with foam in a can. Hopefully that should make the whole thing float and the handle on the bottle give me some idea of the direction the camera is facing so I get a feel for the layout of the boat.

The recordings I did with the big handle showed the railing on one side had been torn off during when I think some one snagged it with an anchor and dragged it into deeper water by that groove I saw on the bottom of the lake in front of the boat. I imagine as they dragged into deeper water it started pulling down pretty hard on their boat. Bet that was a little more excitement than they wanted.

Now I got a question for any one, want to take a guess at who manufactured this boat. I’m going to post some shots of the side the railing was still attached.

Oh by the way, you should have seen all the fish that showed up while I was out there the last time.
