Chevy Pickup Transmission.

I’ve got a problem with my 91 Chev ¾ ton, 350 V8, 4-speed manual transmission. The trany is stuck in 2nd gear. (On this truck 2nd gear is really 1st, as the lowest gear is a granny grear.) When I say it is stuck, I mean it is in gear and the shifter can move left and right, but won’t go back into second or and other gear. The clutch works and takes it out of gear. So, I have forward at 5 MPH and that is it.

The problem first surfaced when backing down the boat ramp. I was in 2nd and rolling back, but not in reverse, clutch in. (Lucky it’s stuck in forward at this point!!) When I moved the shifter out of gear, it stayed in 2nd gear???

It’s at the shop, any idea what they will find?

    Thanks,
    Jon J.

On some manual trannies you have enough clearance to reach alongside or on top of the housing to “shift” the transmission by hand by sliding the linkage shafts forward and back. Did you try this? It’s quite possible that the linkage is messed up but the transmission is OK. I trashed a hurst shifter / linkage one time and was able to manually shift the transmission into 2 gear, out of first, this way. It was a cheap fix to the linkage as It was just a simple pin that held the linkage rod to the housing of the transmission.

If the linkage is in working order, well, then I have no idea!

Yeh, I crawled under there to see if I could see anything….did not. Figured I’d leave it to a pro. Just curious if anyone has ever had the same prob.

In the last 6 months, the radiator, water pump went out. Put on a new set of tires. Starter and Alternator were replace about a year ago. Only has 120,000 but it is pushing 13 years old. Hopefully, this will be the last repare for a while. I want to get 200,000 before getting a new truck. I don’t like payments!!

I hope they find something cheap and that it lasts a long time.
Maybe two many zeebies from launching too often on the river. Steve

Someone did the same thing to the muncie in Mom’s ’68 Camaro SS/RS. Linkage was bent such that going from 2nd into reverse would cause it to bind. Dad finally got so good at undoing it that he could just pop open the driver’s door and reach underneath and do a ‘no look’ with a tire iron.

Hopefully it’s just the linkage. If not, then I’m at a loss. If you never heard the synchros grinding or had jitter, popping out of gear, etc then the gearbox is likely allright. I’ve never heard of anyone trashing one of those granny-gear chevy four speeds before, and I know people who beat trucks senseless for a living.

Same – same. Muncie in a Firebird Formula. I won’t go into HOW I bent the linkage though. Not sure what the statute of limitations is on some of the stuff I did that night…lol

    Just kidding.

    Gianni,
If it was your Mom’s car, what’s you Dad doing popping the driver’s side door open to fix it? ;-) Kidding – if my wife owned a ’68 RS, I’d be driving it as often as possible as well! Luv thos old ‘maros!!

My tire iron was used to re-align the clutch pivot in my ’67 RS.

$682.91 worth of repairs. Something about dogs and springs and gaskets and seals…Oh My….

Oh well, that’s life. I get her back tomorrow so I’ll be ready for this weekend! Gave me a few days to wash the boat and let those Pool 2 eyes have a rest.

    hey Jon,

I know what you mean about payments. I am affraid of getting a new truck because they have maid them disposibles. I own a 91 1/2 ton extended cab. it had 120,000 on it when i baught it. and i found out that some of the stuff is going to break, but keep on the routine maint. and you should be ok. look at it this way, the money you have spent already isn’t going towards interest. it is paid for and not another bill hitting the mail box. I now have over 180,000 on that same truck in 2 years. still runs like a top. baby it, and it will last!!!

Just put 1359.00 in my tow vehicle and hopefully it will hold together. Not ready for the ”payment” yet for a newer one. Front end should now be good and maybe with some luck it won’t want to back into the river anymore, lol. Thanks, Bill

    OOOOOOUUUUCCCCCCCHHHHHHH!!

Bill that had to have cut into the minnow money$$$$$ geeze!! now wonder why we all want new rigs. that way we don’t have to spend the money to fix it, or take time off the water. if that would have gotten much higher, we would have had to hold a benefit for you just to get your truck back to ya!!

hey good luck fishing this weekend. hope to see some pictures

Hated to put the money into an 1988 Blazer but I figured for that amount of money I could only buy something that would probably need that work done to it anyway. I only use it to tow my boat with so it doesn’t get alot of use since its not driven everyday. Whats a guy to do-Gotta keep fishin! Its a must! Thanks, Bill
