I know there are a lot or St. Croix Rod users out there. I was just wondering what everyones favorite is? What type of applications you use it for and what type of line you run with it. Just looking to gather a little information. Much appreciated!

What is your Favorite St. Croix Rod

My favorite is the 6′ 8″ Avid medium x-fast. Love it for pitching jigs with 6 # diameter hi-vis line. I greatly prefer it over the 6′ 6″ same action rod offered by Croix that USED to be my favorite.
For trolling the 10′ 6″ Wild River rods are the BOMB for longlining cranks and pulling boards. Light 3 ways too. Up to around 2 ounces. Just a super rod with a great, slow action tip and lots of “guts” when you need some backbone. I use 6# diameter Spider Wire stealth on these rods for trolling cranks and when pulling 3-ways I still have some 6# fireline on some quantum flipping switch reels that really like. When it’s time to replace the fireline the stealth is going on those reels as it’s really been a great product for me this summer… LOVE IT!

I love all my St. Croixs. I use the 6’3″ Avid Xtra fast for vertical jigging and tossing shallow. This is a vertical jigging machine though.
I run a 6’6″ Avid medium casting for pulling bottom bouncers up to 2 ounces.
I run the 7′ Pro Glass Medium for long lining cranks or whipping cranks at wingdams.
The 8′ Pro Glass Medium heavy for my planer rods or lead core, could be a little longer, but they suffice.
The 7′ Avid heavy casting for anything over 3 ounces.
And last but not least, the best live bait rigging rod I have ever had my hands on is the Avid 7’6″ ML Avid Xtra fast. I love this rod for lindy and bobber fishing.
I have two of just about all the rods mentioned above and I’m about 5 reels short right now. The wife seems to think we need sod worse than I need 3 more Daiwa line counters and two more Abu’s.

………….TOO LATE!! LOL! Yer killin’ me ‘fowler!
I’ll cut you all a break though and just list the same rod that I mentioned in the post James linked to.
I love the Legend Elite 7′ MLF. It’s not for everyone but I end up taking it everywhere and catching fish about anywhere I take it! Very versatile in many ways, I just like to have it with me for the variety, if necessary.
I have a Shimano Stradic 2000 on it, spooled up with 8lb. “Hi-Vis” Fireline.
After reading that old post James, I had a thought………….even hurt a little!
In explaining the Avid 6’8″ over the 7’MLF, it occurred to me that while never fishing with the 6’8″, I have the 6’3″ model. In examining the construction of these rods and our questioning power deep in the blank, is it more an issue of power being loaded/transferred to the deep part of blank vs. the amount of strength it actually has at the bottem end?
Example:
The 6’3″ has a softer, more giving tip, therefore keeping less of the load and transferring that strain further down the blank. The 7’MLF has a soft tip but at a greater length. Therefore, at the same length (6’3″ of the 7′) should have a stiffer resistance, carry more of the load, and seeming to have less power at the bottom, where you’re used to feeling it.Do you see any validity in this explaining why you feel more power deep in the blank on an ex-fast tip vs. a fast tip?
August 1, 2003 at 8:05 pm #272249For live bait rigging I use a 7′ 6″ Avid in ML action and a fast tip. I am running the 2-10 Power Pro on a Symetre reel. Great mud flat combo.
For vertical jigging I like the 6’6″ Avid , L action , X fast tip. Matched with another Symetre with 6 lb XT Solar , this rig offers a good feel for the light biters.
DinoAugust 1, 2003 at 8:12 pm #272250I love the Avid 7’3″ telescoping baitcaster for flipping the milfoil with jigs or texas rigs. Super senseative to feel light bites. Lightweight rod for all day use. I also use Stealth, but up it to the 14lb range. I also use the same rod fishing top water in the slop.
August 3, 2003 at 1:45 pm #272338I have been getting a ton of use out of the Premier Spinning 7 foot 6 inch rod (PS76MLF) This is a super slip bobber, live bait rigging rod that also gets used for tossing jigs/plastics. This rod goes on every trip to Mille Lacs and gets pulled out of the rod locker on a regular basis. For only $90 bucks, I feel I’m getting more than my money’s worth here!
The 8 foot glass rod (GT80M) collapses into the handle to a storage length of about 6.5 feet. This rod matches up well with the Diawa LC27 linecounter reel. All of my planner board trolling is done with this set up.
The Avid 7 foot medium power, fast action (AC70MF) is my go-to crankbait casting rod. Super lightweight and very sensitive is a pleasure to fish with. I do a little bit of trolling with this rod, but it feels so good in my hand I just can’t put it in a rod holder! Match this up with a quality low profile baitcasting reel and I’m sure you’ll be grabbing this rod a lot!
One more…. The 6 foot Premier med/fast (PS60MF) is a great rod for vereticle jig fishing that won’t put a big dent in the wallet for only $80.
Favorite? Don’t know. A guy needs a half dozen rods for each application. We all like things a little different. St. Croix has a rod to match everyone’s liking. I have found the “Rod Selector” on their site to be a great guide. I’d suggest running the program before going out for a look. See this link. Click around till you see the rod selector for the type of rod you are interested in.

August 3, 2003 at 3:19 pm #272344Have to say I love all of the ones I have. I use the Premier 7 footers PC70MF medium with fast tip and the PC70MLF medium light with fast tip rods for trolling 3-ways and live bait. I also use the 10.6 ft. Wild River WC106MMF2 rods for that application too. For jigging I use the 6 ft. Avid Series AS60MF medium with a fast tip and also use these rods for lindy rigging too. These rods will double for casting also along with a 7ft. Avid Series AS70MLF med. light with a fast tip which also workss great for slip bobbering panfish. St. Croix makes so many great rods a person can never have enough. There are so many different presentations out there to use that I’m looking forward to getting some more rods to help fine tune each presentation. You can’t go wrong with St. Croix. You will love em. Thanks, Bill
