When setting up a NMEA 2000 network you might want to
explore the option of having a separate power lead
LEI part# 119-75 to power the network.
The advantages to setting it up this way is that you won’t
always have to have a unit where the network would have
    otherwised been powered.
Lets say for example you have two X-28’s and you set up
a network at the bow and console and you powered the network at the console.
Now lets say you need to send one
in for repair. You will no longer be able to use a unit
at the bow because you need the unit at the console always connected to power the network. (you could use it for
sonar functions at the bow……..no GPS)
With the separate network power cable you now have the ability to use that unit at both locations because the
power is not running through either of the units.
If I had to do it over I would have definitely powered
the network separately. Then I could run a unit at the
bow and second one at the stern without needing a third unit installed at the console.

    I did the same thing.

I figured since there was a seperate power supply for the Network, that you could have the Slave unit off and run the other one. I figured wrong.

    Rob,

Are you saying “slave unit off” as in no power to the
    to the display?
My other locations will work if I have the slave unit
connected and just the network power switched on. I
do not need to have the display powered.
Or by off did you mean off the boat?

Thanks for the tip. I actually put the network power cable in because I didn’t know the network would run without it. But it is nice to have it that way. Just last night I went out and used only the front finder, didn’t even put the console unit on. But I could still use the GPS and everything with the front finder because the network is powered up outside the unit.
